Solid start to November (early November is generally weak).

>Eternals debuts atop the box-office, selling 184,396 admissions over the weekend frame across 813 screens, and 264,758 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is Disney's biggest Opening Weekend in two-years, and is a bit above average for the average Marvel/DC film in the market. Good start, and while it's bound to be frontloaded given the genre/brand (and likely being cut short by its Disney+ release), it's guaranteed to exceed the ¥1 billion ($9 million) milestone to become Disney's first successful film in the market since 2019. Expect a finish between ¥1.3-1.6 billion ($11-14 million).

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Unexpected Picture Book and the Secret Child was a pleasant surprise performance over the weekend, selling an impressive 172,000 admissions over the weekend on just 184 screens (just 12,397 shy of taking first place), and sold 202,516 admissions over its first three-days in release. I read it had an opening weekend giveaway event, largely explaining its overperformance, but it's still impressive nonetheless. It's hard to say how this one will behave right now, but with this opening, it should be targeting the ¥1 billion ($9 million) milestone.

>What Did You Eat Yesterday? opened ahead of the weekend on Wednesday, so its opening weekend was a bit deflated. Based on the popular live-action TV show (and manga), the film sold 100,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 298 screens, and over its first five-days due to the Wednesday start, sold 299,900 admissions. Wednesday debuts are very rare so hard to make any comparisons, but with these numbers a total above the ¥1 billion ($9 million) milestone is pretty likely. And based on the strength of its first Monday, in which it almost took first place, it's probably going to go a bit higher than that.

>Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night fell very hard, not unsurprising for a pretty exclusively appealing fanbase film, but still managed to double up on its opening weekend after its second week. Still, Aniplex will likely have to schedule a giveaway weekend or two to get it to ¥1.5 billion ($13/14 million) which I expect will become the targeted goal.

>And, the Baton Was Passed held amazingly well, and combined with its strong weekdays, its more than double its opening weekend after its second week already. Assuming it continues to hold well (doesn't even have to be this well), it's very likely to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone, giving 2021 (and Warner Bros.) another successful release.

>Masquerade Night rounds out the Top 10 in its seventh weekend. After seven weeks, its sold over 2,624,333 admissions. It's nearing the end of its release, but it has enough left to surpass F9: The Fast Saga to climb one more spot up the 2021 Top Grossing Films list. Expect a finish a tad over ¥3.7 billion (~$34 million) and 2.7 million+ admissions.

very funny how strong old trilogy was in JP and Euro. Best period for superhero movies in these markets.

Hosoda's Belle (¥6.52B) was a great improvement over Boy and The Beast (¥5.85B). Next will probably be above ¥8B &has a chance of reaching ¥10B+. But, overseas fanbase isn't very great. (Gross are still in $***K)

BTW, have you watched Belle during BFI London Film Festival?

ER was very bad during 2000s.

Japan loves Tobey very much.

Fanbase following gross:

I did Yeah. I think part of the issue here in the UK at least, his movies are picked up and given traditional style releases with very little fanfare. Compare that to Shinkai where his movies are turned in to big one day events, hell they did pretty big double bill shows for Weathering With You that included Your Name before it.

Piracy of Anime Film is just an huge issue outside Japan. That's why Distribution/Production rarely decided general release for foreign fanbase unless there's an local distributor ready to buy without counting any loss. Many just try to reach out fans but camrip get available once release outside Japan. Other than that, Overseas Distribution is a quite mess.

Therefore, I think releasing at Film festival is a way more better than general release. At least, we can control piracy &appeal fanbase.

BTW, I think you loved Belle more than The Boy and The Beast. I would like to hear some reviews from you.🌼
