He's been making it for a while, not sure why that's breaking news exactly. It also won't beat Demon Slayer. DS didn't just beat Spirited Away, it gosh darn smashed it.

Like Spirited Away was broken after 19 years. I think it would take more than 25-30 years to beat Demon Slayer Mugen Train record. But, with declining population, I think there is not a single chance unless any film can attract all-age audience.

 

Hayao Miyazaki is now a old man. His last film will try to attract more people (probably going above ¥20B to ¥30B.) as an tribute to his directorial retirement. I am still his biggest fan since I watched Ponyo. I have watched almost all of his works. And my all-time favorite from his directorial list are My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

Ponyo was my first film of his as well, went to see that at the cinema with absolutely no context and absolutely loved it. Though it's the only Ghibli movie I can't watch in Japanese
