"The admissions battle favors Pokemon but since it's avg. ticket price is among the lowest every year (15-20% below the avg.) due to tons of advance ticket sales + skewing toward kids and students (unless Mewtwo's presence brings in enough 20/30 year olds this year), it and Monsters University should have a close race in gross."

Per Corpse, MU is doing amazingly well there.

Wowza. Sunday was a discount day at Toho Cinemas, but these increases are still crazy.

Insane for Monsters University. I knew it was going to overtake Pokemon during Sunday and the Weekend after checking various theaters yesterday with families coming out in full force due to the discount tickets and cheaper 3D prices for the day, but to still see such a large increase over Sunday is incredible, and for the weekend itself (which I'll post soon) it actually saw an increase in admissions over it's opening weekend and blew last Sunday out of the water.

Very good for Pokemon, but unless it beat MU by a considerable amount at Aeon (formally Warner Mycal) and Movix Cinemas, it's going to have to settle for a 2nd place debut again this year despite it's performance.

And also insane numbers for Midsummer Formula. More than doubling it's Saturday admissions on Sunday.

Early reviews for TWR are insane. It is said to be Miyazaki's best work.

I never cared about this.I don't say it's a poor-quality movie,I just say it's the least interesting in my opinion.Where is the usual magic? this one is too realistic.Spirited Away is still my favorite.

I have the same feeling.

But to Japanese people, Miyazaki is God.

Overall, Monsters University handily won the weekend at Toho Cinemas with 122,357 admissions (37% 3D share) for the weekend, up 0.4% over it's opening weekend admission here.

In terms of gross, it'll still drop (softly) here from last weekend since Sunday was a discount day at these locations, but mighty impressive nonetheless. With it's strength at Toho Cinemas, it may be looking at 500,000 admissions for it's second weekend. The last film to have such a strong second weekend was One Piece Film Z in December.

Pokemon did 71% of MU's opening weekend admissions at Toho Cinemas, but it's more difficult to determine what it may have done for the overall weekend since kid films generally play better at Aeon Cinemas (which since purchasing Warner Mycal, is the largest chain now), and both it and Movix Cinemas were playing the film longer into the evening. It should be somewhere in the vicinity of 500,000 admissions, too, though.

Midsummer Formula saw a big increase of 18% in admissions over it's second weekend at Toho Cinemas thanks to Sunday, and will be looking at a very impressive third weekend. It's been recovering extremely well after opening.

Monday is a national holiday, so we'll be lucky if estimates are released today. More than likely, no figures will be released until Tuesday for 3-Day numbers.
