Deadline reports: In Japan, the shows didn’t begin until 6:30PM local, but they beat the previous Friday record-setter, Pirates Of The Caribbean 3, which started its run at 9AM.

What record is this? Biggest opening Friday for a Hollywood film?

And in admissions,in lc or in $?

So SW7 will bring more $ than Yokai, Japan's honor is safe :D

And that's it for Saturday! Here's the update breakdown:

Saturday Pre-sales:
138,795 - Star Wars VII
116,563 - Yo-Kai Watch 2

2PM Update:
206,086/307,147 (67.1% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
124,236/277,990 (44.7% capacity) - Star Wars VII

7PM Update:

FINAL Update:
317,709/530,456 (59.9% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 2
293,246/714,702 (41.0% capacity) - Star Wars VII

Yo-Kai Watch 2 more than doubled the previous biggest opening days of 2015 (Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F - 153,852 and Jurassic World - 152,210), and Star Wars VII came pretty close to doubling them, as well!

I'll have Saturday Estimates up soon, as well as updated Weekend Projections.

Saturday Estimates:
¥690 million ($5.7 million) / 620,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
¥820 million ($6.8 million) / 505,000 admissions - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Updated Weekend Projections:
¥1,350,000,000 ($11.1 million) / 1,225,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
¥1,575,000,000 ($13.0 million) / 975,000 admissions - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This is the first time in history that two ¥1 billion openers have ever debuted on the same weekend (think of this as two films in the US opening to $125/150 million or so on the same weekend), and it'd be an even more staggering weekend if Star Wars VII can exceed 1 million admissions, giving the weekend two 1 million+ admissions debuts, too.

And if it's still any question, this weekend will be the biggest of all-time.

Excellent, excellent Sunday for both films at the mid-point of the day. Both are probably looking at increases over Saturday, or very minimal decreases (sub-5%) if the evening business ends up being noticeably slower than yesterday.

Weekend Estimates (12/19-20)

Gross ¥ ($) / Admissions - Film
¥1,450,000,000 ($12.0 million) / 925,000 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
¥1,270,000,000 ($10.5 million) / 1,150,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!

Star Wars: The Force Awaken's 3-day total should be around ¥1.9/1.95 billion ($15.5-16.0 million) with ~1.2 million admissions. The 3-day total will be the figure that Disney reports as the opening weekend later today, so don't be surprised when actuals closely resemble the estimates tomorrow.

>First weekend to have two ¥1 billion openers.
>Biggest aggregated weekend of all-time, based on estimates, though it's super close (0.2%) since all but one holdover (Orange) took severe drops.

It's important to remember that prior to 2012, nearly every blockbuster had previews that were included in their opening weekends. That doesn't happen anymore, and previews are very rare, so breaking into the Top 10 is incredibly difficult these days.

It's been confirmed that Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! came out on top over the weekend in ticket sales.

The usual location's ticket sales and estimates suggested as such, but now it's official. Japan's weekend rankings are based on admissions, like some European markets (perhaps others), so this will technically be the only market that Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn't debut at #1 despite its huge start.

However, unless actuals are significantly different from the estimates, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should have grossed more over the weekend due to its higher avg. ticket prices.

The second Yo-Kai Watch film is down from its record-setting first film last year, as expected, but the franchise is still proving to be a phenomenon across all forms of entertainment.

3-Day Actual: ¥1,619,340,000 ($13.4 million) / 1,044,330 [958] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This is very strong, though certainly lower than expected for the 3-day, I think... Although, it didn't receive a traditional 3-day release. It began playing at 6:30PM on Friday for some reason.

Comparing the openings with the past films won't be perfect since the prequels (Episode II and III anyway) had previews added to their opening weekend, where as Episode VII didn't have any. But, if you consider the early Friday start as its previews, more or less, maybe the comparisons are reasonable:

Opening Weekends (3-days/Previews Included):
¥1,879,423,202 / 1,357,977 [758] - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
¥1,619,340,000 / 1,044,330 [958] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
¥1,604,609,245 / 1,138,689 [639] - Star Wars Episode II: Attack on the Clones

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace's opening weekend is unavailable, but it reportedly sold 500,000+ tickets on its first day. If Sunday behaved the same way then as it does today, it should have sold around 1.1/1.2 million tickets on its opening weekend (on par with the others).

So, the franchise is very consistent. And while Episode III is still firmly the franchise's biggest opener, it was also the most frontloaded and the lowest-grosser among the prequels.

Totals:
¥12.70 billion / 8.30 million - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
¥9.35 billion / 6.80 million - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
¥9.17 billion / 6.60 million - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has little to no competition through the New Year and into early/mid-January, so legs should be excellent. It'll probably surpass Episode's II and III (gross and admissions), though Episode I is likely out of reach. We'll see, though, it's not untouchable.

This weekend will go down in history as the first, and perhaps the last, time that two films debut above the ¥1 billion milestone on the weekend.

>Star Wars: The Force Awakening managed to fend off the Yo-kai, claiming the top spot in terms of revenue, however, it came in second place in terms of admissions.

The seventh chapter in the Star Wars franchise sold 800,258 tickets over its weekend frame across 958 screens, making it the second-widest release in history (behind The Amazing Spider-Man). Since opening prior to the weekend, at 06:30PM on Friday, The Force Awakens exceeded 1 million admissions with 1,044,330 tickets sold in its first "3 days".

If you include the early Friday showings making up its 3 day total (fair since the prequels have previews included in their openings), its opening on on par with Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones by +01% and trailed Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith by -14%. And, it also delivered the third-highest debut for a Hollywood film this decade (2010-), trailing, though just slightly, Alice in Wonderland by -06% (-04%) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -Part 2 by -04% (-09%) in revenue (admissions).

When all is said and done, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should be able to exceed 7 million admissions, which should be enough to exceed the ¥10 billion ($80 million) milestone, and perhaps go as high as ¥11 billion ($90 million). If it does break ¥10 billion, it'll be the first live-action film since Alice in Wonderland to do it. And it's likely to become the second biggest Star Wars film, behind Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, too.

**********

>Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! couldn't match the ticket prices from that galaxy from far, far away, settling for second place in terms of revenue, though it did sell more tickets over the weekend giving it the first place ranking on the Japanese weekend charts.

The second film in the Yo-Kai Watch phenomenon sold a whopping 974,557 tickets over the weekend on 434 screens. This a fairly large decline of 34% compared to last year's film, but it's still a staggering number and managed to achieve a strong 59% capacity over the weekend frame.

It achieved the fourth biggest debut for any animated title in ticket sales, behind the first Yo-Kai Watch by -34%, One Piece Film Z by -14%, and Howl's Moving Castle by -12%. And in terms of revenue, it delivered the seventh biggest debut of any domestic film.

It wasn't able to replicate the insane rush to see the first film last year, but I believe it has a strong chance of pulling off stronger legs as a result now that the craze has calmed just a bit this year. Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! should be on track for around 5 million admissions, and a total between ¥5-6 billion (~$45/50 million).

**********

The holdovers all experienced some expected heavy drops after losing considerable seating/showtimes, except for one.

>Orange delivered an excellent second weekend in the face of two monster debuts, and served as a perfect counter. The shoji manga live-action adaptation appeals primarily to teens/young adults, and this demographic didn't turn up in significant numbers for either Star Wars (adults/seniors) nor Yo-Kai Watch (elementary aged children/families), so it's going to survive this upcoming New Year holiday frame perfectly unharmed.
