% changes versus same day last week.

Note: During the pre-New Year's Week, or Christmas Week is you like, films targeting children and families benefit the most. Films that target an adult audience receive a slight boost, but are mostly unaffected since they still have work to attend. Then, during the actual New Year's Week, adult films see a substantial boost since their audience have some work-free days. Children/Family films do well during New Year's Week, too, but it's a more subdued boost.

Christmas Week = Stronger for Family/Children films.
New Year's Week = Stronger for Adult films.

I would put doubt Ralph would hold the lead in new year week due to the existence of Love Live Sunshine, and more surprisingly no one mentioned up to now.

Even essentially not really a sequel of the Original series in 2015 (relationship betwen the two are something like FB and HP, or DBZ and DBP), consider the original series still managed a 400 million-ish in Day 1/2 and current group's Kouhaku performance few days before on screen. Really need some strong finish to beat it and their gift factor too (see page 49x-ish for what really had happened in BO for original series)

Weekend Forecast (12/29-30)

02 (01) ¥327,000,000 ($3.0 million), -28%, ¥1,660,000,000 ($15.1 million), Ralph Breaks the Internet (Disney) WK2
03 (03) ¥293,000,000 ($2.6 million), -30%, ¥2,660,000,000 ($23.8 million), Dragon Ball Super: Broly (Toei) WK3
04 (04) ¥194,000,000 ($1.8 million), -50%, ¥895,000,000 ($8.1 million), Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER (Toei) WK2
05 (05) ¥183,000,000 ($1.7 million), -20%, ¥5,625,000,000 ($50.1 million), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Warner Bros.) WK6
06 (06) ¥117,000,000 ($1.1 million), -37%, ¥625,000,000 ($5.6 million), A Star is Born (Warner Bros.) WK2
07 (08) ¥109,000,000 ($985,000), -19%, ¥785,000,000 ($7.2 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Forever Friends (Toho) WK3
08 (07) ¥x97,000,000 ($875,000), -35%, ¥860,000,000 ($7.8 million), The Grinch (Toho-Towa) WK3
09 (---) ¥x80,000,000 ($675,000), 0, ¥125,000,000 ($1.3 million), A Banana? At This Time of Night? (Toho) NEW
10 (09) ¥x45,000,000 ($405,000), -40%, ¥285,000,000 ($2.5 million), Nisekoi: False Love (Toho) WK2

And we've come to it at last -- Bohemian Rhapsody is looking to reclaim the #1 spot in its eighth weekend of release, which will be its first time back on top since its second weekend. It'll be pretty close between it and the second weekend of Ralph Breaks the Internet, but it should be the slight favorite. Big Hero 6 dropped 24% in its second weekend, the last weekend of December 2014, and I'm doubtful Ralph 2 will do quite as well given the weaker reception.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly should, more or less, keep following a similar trajectory as the previous film, Resurrection F, but should once again hold slightly better than its predecessor over the weekend. A similar, either slightly better or worse, third weekend and total after three weeks will be quite advantageous in its goal of becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise with New Year coming up next week.

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER will likely see the usual ~50% second weekend drop that nearly every film in the series experiences. It's possible it could approach a 55% drop after its bigger debut, but maybe the extra hype surrounding the film from fans will keep it around that 50% mark again.

>Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald continues to find success in Japan, and having already surpassed its gross in the U.K. two weeks ago in the market, it's now on track to eventually surpass its gross in China in the market, as well, to become its #1 international territory. Unlike just about every market -- major market at least -- the film will end up having a comparable gross as the original in Japan.

>A Star is Born... after a mediocre debut, and only decent set of weekdays, I was hoping it'd begin to turn things around in its second weekend ahead of New Year, but that doesn't appear likely to happen. Its reception in Japan is positive, but it's not as strong as in the U.S. and some other markets (audience scores are between 3.5-4 out of 5). I'm sure it'll do great next week during New Year, but its numbers are just too small to post anything too remarkable. And again, Warner Bros. probably should have held off on its release until the Spring.

I have an crazy idea about bohemian's run in Japan.

I compare BR with Les Miserable in 2012, the year also, the Christmas and new year fall on Tuesday.

Les Miserable's opening

Dec. 22–23 2 $3,591,693    -    360    -     $9,977     $4,608,613   1

BR's 7th weekend.

Dec. 22–23 3 $3,436,423 -9.4% 506 -12 $6,791 $55,301,899  7

Since Les's opening gross on the opening is about the same as BR's pre-Christmas gross at the same time frame, it make the comparison realistic and even more when Les is also an PG-13 music-themed film.

Let us assume the BR would follow Les's run from here.

Les's final total is 62m, if BR follow the same pathway, BR could get up to 110m!!!!! or ¥12.5b Yen!

Spiderman in march 😫

It's completely normal to have that late in release schedule in the context of japanese market.

Frozen released in Nov in USA and Dec in many place, but japan only got in on Mar next year, the movie went on to become the one of the biggest phenomenal in Japan despite the late-release.

You have that spring holiday in March, that's why animated film could do better there, instead of clashing head-to-head with wreck-it-ralph 2 and some other high profile local anime.

As for aquaman, superhero film generally don't do well in japan, so 10m is where the realistic expectation for Aquaman.

The movie has been overperforming in ever Asian market though. I think the movie will gross a lot more than 10 million,

And overperformance for a super hero movie in Japan looks like Venom (19M) and that has being associated with Spiderman to help.

Superheros bar Spiderman and Avengers just don't do big grosses in Japan. You have literally all the MCU and DCEU as a proof.

Ralph Breaks the Internet appears to have held off Bohemian Rhapsody in reclaiming the #1 spot with a great hold second weekend hold.

I'm going to wait until actuals to type up any weekend analysis, but this weekend largely behaved like a typical last weekend of December -- very normal. With New Year's Eve falling on Monday, Sunday's business was deflated a bit, but expect some big, big numbers from Tuesday onward.

New Year's Eve isn't technically part of the New Year Holiday Period, and it's much weaker than the upcoming week. Monday is also down a lot versus last Monday, because last Monday was a national holiday (Emperor's Birthday Observance).

New Year's Eve isn't technically part of the New Year Holiday Period, and it's much weaker than the upcoming week. Monday is also down a lot versus last Monday, because last Monday was a national holiday (Emperor's Birthday Observance).

From things gathered in twitter, the pre-sale figure of Love Live Sunshine looked far less from its predecessor (though the original one started on Sat so hard to say a medicare debut yet but not looked good either)

A slight chance of either Bohemian or Ralph get this weekend's win?

I see the chance of Bohemian reclaiming the top is higher if Love Live Sunshine underperform.

Bohemian up 112% from last's week, if the momentum keep on, this weekend maybe higher than any weekend before.
