JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Sunday is down 18.7% from last week, I've got the weekend at about 850M-900M yen (-22% from last weekend). About $7.5m-$8m.

It is good enough for the 7th-9th best 3rd weekend ever.

If average ticket price is inflated like last weekend, it could go higher, but 1 billion is very unlikely.

BATB 3rd weekend 893M yen, 629k admissions

Total to date: 6.696B yen, 4.73M adm

weekend ticket price dropped to 1414, its audience becomes younger through its run.

Still heading to 12-13B yen total in Japan, let's see how big it drops this weekend first.

Conan  5.39B

Sing  4.92B

Apparently Pirates has a good release date here and it could do well

I think it will depend if the Pirates franchise is still as strong as it was before. It's been such a long gap, and Depp isn't as popular as before. We've seen sequels to 10+ billion yen earners disappoint recently in Japan (Finding Dory and Alice 2).

>Beauty and the Beast easily retains its position atop the box office, delivering the 8th biggest third weekend of all-time and the 4th biggest three week total of all-time with the major boost it received from Golden Week this past week. After three weeks in release, the film has sold 4,731,206 admissions.

Disney's latest live-action re-imagining will continue to dominate the box office for awhile, perhaps for the remainder of the month, and is well on its way to exceeding the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone. As long as it's able to withstand the post-Golden Week decline over the next couple weeks, I expect a total around ¥11/12 billion ($100/105 million) and 8 million admissions.

>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter climbs back to second place in its fourth weekend of release, and exceeded the ¥5 billion milestone over the weekend. Detective Conan films fall quickly after Golden Week, but the 21st entry in the long-running franchise is targeting a total around ¥6.5 billion (~$60 million), setting another record for the franchise - for the fifth consecutive year. There's a very good chance it'll be 2017's highest-grossing animated film.

>The Fate of the Furious had one of the biggest drops over the weekend, though it's noticeably stronger than any of its predecessors, and thanks to healthy Golden Week dailies, is well on track to at least match the gross of Furious 7. There's still a fair enough chance of even outgrossing it, too, and look for a finish around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+).

>Memory, from director Yasuo Furuhata and starring Junichi Okada and Shun Oguri, debuted in fourth place over the weekend frame, selling a decent 180,246 admissions across 296 screens. The debut is nothing to get too excited about, but it is enough to guarantee yet another ¥1 billion ($10 million) earner for distributor Toho, and 2017.

>Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, the second film based on the Fairy Tail anime/manga, managed to earn itself a debut in the Top 10, selling 42,771 admissions on 101 screens. A debut in the Top 10 was looking doubtful, and with a barely wide theater count, its chances were pretty slim, yet fans and distributor should be satisfied.

>Moana fell out of the Top 10 in its ninth weekend of release, but with the boost it received from Golden Week, it has exceeded the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone.

>Your Name. is still in release, and although it's not earning much these days, it's still making enough to be tracked. After 37 weeks in release now, Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster has grossed ¥24,942,120,000 ($235.8 million) and has sold 19,215,629 admissions.

I think 20% drop post-Golden Week is pretty good for Beauty and the Beast. Alice in Wonderland dropped over 52% after Golden Week, although it was in its 4th weekend then. As long as it continues to outpace Alice, over 11.8 billion yen is good.

Detective Conan is doing pretty well. Is that Live action version or the anime? I remember the anime a while back.

Anime. It's too bad the series tends to be so frontloaded. It opened higher than BatB but might only get half of its gross.

It's the Disney machine. Disney tends to eat up all it's completion. Really not that fair, but 48M nothing to sneeze at. I can name a few movies that would died for that much. heh

It has nothing to do with Disney. Detective Conan movies pretty much get the same multiplier every year (5-5.5) regardless of competition. Same thing for Shin-chan movies, Doraemon movies, Pokemon movies, etc.
