>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales defended its #1 position atop the box office in its second weekend, and held particularly well coming off a debut weekend that was assisted by a discount day; it sold 491,737 admissions over its sophomore frame. The fifth Pirates installment will likely continue to play well throughout the month (might even repeat atop the box office for a third weekend), and should still be aiming for a total around ¥7 billion ($60 million+) milestone.

>Mary and the Witch's Flower had to settle for a second place, selling 324,294 admissions across 457 screens over the weekend. The film's debut didn't come as close to ¥500 million as early signs indicated, but it's still a fine start if a tad underwhelming. It's very important to remember that this isn't a Studio Ghibi film (even though Studio Ponoc is comprised of former Ghibli employees), yet its opening came in 13% higher than Hiromasa Yonebayashi''s previous film When Marnie Was There. It depends on how the audience reception is after next week (start of Summer Vacation), though legs in general are very strong in July/August, so a total of ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($30-35 million) is doable and certainly nothing to scoff at.

>Confessions of a Murderer became Warner Bros.' highest-grossing film of 2017 so far, and has sold over 1.5 million admissions after five weeks in release.

>John Wick: Chapter 2 couldn't make the Top 5, but it was also distributed by an independent studio and was playing on just 155 screens. So, taking that into account, I'd say its opening is fairly good. The film sold 76,706 admissions after three days in release.

Why is Box Office Mojo not recognizing the Japan figures for Pirates and misrepresenting the world total? They must have a hard on for Wonder Woman. Integrity in this industry means you report the numbers right no matter who you are rooting for. Box Office Mojo is playing below the belt now.

Are you going to explain what you are on about or are you just going leave this cryptic conspiracy theory without any explanation?

Mojo take a long time updating individual country, but the worldwide total probably take it into account:

Almost the same intl numbers that the-numbers.com (mojo is a little bit bigger) and they have japan at 23.2million

I can see Gintama as a comfortable number one this weekend 🤔

In admission it will be comfotable number one, the gross will be a bit closer because of the ticket price, but at it's doing 60% more admission then Pirates. Around 800M yen?

Saturday Report (07/15/17):

Pokemon: I Choose You!, the 20th entry in the series, outpaced last year's film by an astounding 67%, and the eighteenth film by an incredible 54%. If Sunday delivers, it'll be on target to achieve the biggest debut in the series since 2011 (movie 14) and earn anywhere from the 5th-7th biggest debut in the entire franchise. Talk about a turnaround after the past several years!

Gintama is performing quite well and is yet another domestic hit for Warner Bros.. Its first day is slightly below the first Rurouni Kenshin film, also from WB, and while it won't debut at #1 in admissions thanks to Pokemon, it's still a contender for the #1 spot in revenue.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales held very well facing some new competition, and seems headed for a sub-30% drop in its third weekend. Like Gintama, it won't be able to match Pokemon's admissions over the weekend, thus being dethroned atop the box office there, but it still has a good chance of claiming the #1 spot in revenue for a third-consecutive weekend.

Cars 3 is clearly skewing younger than any Pixar film I've tracked given its poor evening showing. As a result, it could debut below both of its predecessors and end up as the third lowest opener among Pixar films.

Mary and the Witch's Flower was unable to recover throughout the day and is till heading toward a 35% or so decrease in its second weekend, and that's not good. Its debut was fine, if underwhelming, so it really needed to hold on well over the next several weeks and so far, no good.

Power Rangers performed even worse than it appeared early yesterday and will only rank 7th-9th in its debut weekend...

Updated Weekend Projections:

2-Day:
¥525-550 million ($4.6-4.8 million) / 350,000-375,000 admissions - Pirates 5 (WK3)

Pirates will easly win today, it has taken the nr1 spot in admission and only down 19% from last week. I expect a beter evening then last week so about 17% drop for today. Mostly cause monday is part of the extended weekend so easier to go to late night shows i guess.

01 (01) ¥584,000,000 ($5.1 million), -21%, ¥3,750,000,000 ($32.9 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Disney) WK3
02 (---) ¥525,000,000 ($4.6 million), 0, ¥525,000,000 ($4.6 million), Pokemon: I Choose You! (Toho) NEW
03 (---) ¥510,000,000 ($4.5 million), 0, ¥700,000,000 ($6.2 million), Gintama (Warner Bros.) NEW
04 (---) ¥380,000,000 ($3.3 million), 0, ¥380,000,000 ($3.3 million), Cars 3 (Disney) NEW

05 (02) ¥312,000,000 ($2.7 million), -27%, ¥1,050,000,000 ($9.3 million), Mary and the Witch's Flower (Toho) WK2
06 (03) ¥176,000,000 ($1.6 million), -26%, ¥1,500,000,000 ($13.1 million), Shinobi's Country (Toho) WK3
07 (---) ¥115,000,000 ($1.0 million), 0, ¥115,000,000 ($1.0 million), No Game, No Life -Zero- (Kadokawa) NEW
08 (04) ¥69,000,000 ($605,000)), -37%, ¥625,000,000 ($5.5 million), I Have Difficulty Being Loved Too Much (Shochiku) WK4
09 (---) ¥65,000,000 ($575,000), 0, ¥65,000,000 ($575,000), Power Rangers (Toei) NEW
10 (05) ¥63,000,000 ($555,000), -41%, ¥2,225,000,000 ($19.8 million), Confessions of a Murderer (Warner Bros.) WK7

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales likely retained its position atop the box office with a great third weekend hold in the face of a lot of new competition. The fifth entry in the Pirates franchise continues to perform within expectations following its opening, and is still on course for a total around ¥7.0-7.5 billion ($60-70 million).

>Pokemon: I Choose You! definitely won the weekend in terms of admissions (450,000+), but since the franchise skews very young, it'll have to settle for second (maybe third) over the weekend in revenue. Its weekend rank, however, isn't the story to tell here: The 20th film in the franchise saw a significant increase of 65% over last year's film, and a 52% increase over the film before it. The newest film will be aiming for a total of ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+). The Pokemon film franchise had been on a downward spiral in recent years, with the last couple scoring franchise lows, so the result of the new film is more than welcomed and couldn't have happened at a better time.

>Gintama performed very well over the weekend, and if it stays above ¥500 million, it'll have a comparable opening to the first Rurouni Kenshinsequel and the Death Note films (all from Warner Bros.). The film opened ahead of the weekend on Friday, so its ongoing total should be pretty close to ¥700 million already. Also, after tomorrow's holiday, its four day total will be near ¥1 billion going into the Summer weekdays. Look for a total of ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($30-40 million) for the live-action adaptation of the popular Gintama manga/anime.

>Cars 3 mostly disappointed, having to settle for a fourth place debut over the weekend. Its estimated opening weekend is almost 20% below Cars 2 and just on par with Cars. It'll still end up with a respectable total given the time of year, and should be on target for a total near ¥3 billion ($25 million).

>Mary and the Witch's Flower recovered on Sunday and avoided a 30% drop in its second weekend, which would have been quite disappointing. So far, its performance is similar as When Marnie Was There (slightly higher), so it's currently heading for a total between ¥3.0-3.5 billion ($25-30 million+).

>Power Rangers really bombed, much more so than anticipated. I suppose it's not that surprising, since Japan has had Kamen Rider and Super Sentai for nearly 50 years now, but it's still a disastrous debut. It'll be a target of severe screen/showtime cuts now, so I'm guessing it'll finish around ¥300 million ($3 million) or so.

Monday is a holiday, so Weekend Actuals will be delayed until Tuesday/Wednesday. I'll track the admissions as I did over the weekend today (Monday) as well, and post 3-Day Holiday Weekend Estimates tomorrow night.
