NOTE: Cumulative totals are as of Monday (the 17th).

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales retained its position atop the box office with a great third weekend in revenue, but actually fell to third place in admissions, selling 388,679 admissions in its third weekend. The fifth entry in the Pirates franchise continues to perform within expectations following its opening, and is still on course for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($70 million).

>Gintama performed very well over the weekend, matching the debuts of other WB live-action adaptations such as Rurouni Kenshin and Death Note. The live-action adaptation of the popular Gintama manga/anime sold 392,800 admissions over the weekend frame (and 742,254 for its 4-day) across 338 screens; it's the biggest debut for Warner Bros. so far this year, and the biggest debut for a live-action domestic film as well. Look for a total ¥4.0 billion+ ($35 million+), giving Warner Bros. yet another big hit in the market on the domestic front.

>Pokemon: I Choose You! won the weekend in terms of admissions, selling 436,078 admissions over the weekend frame (and 663,595 for the 3-day) across 368 screens, but had to settle for third in revenue due to its low avg. ticket price. Its weekend rank, however, isn't the story to tell here: The 20th film in the franchise saw a significant increase of 59% over last year's film. The newest film will be aiming for a total of ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+) and over 3 million admissions. The Pokemon film franchise had been on a downward spiral in recent years, with the last couple scoring franchise lows, so the result of the new film is more than welcomed and couldn't have happened at a better time.

>Cars 3 mostly disappointed, having to settle for a fourth place debut over the weekend selling 251,989 admissions over the weekend frame (and 403,051 for the 3-day) across 440 screens. Its opening weekend is 27% below Cars 2 and 16% below Cars. I'm sure it'll have fine legs given the time of year, but a total of ¥2.5 billion ($20 million+) will be near its ceiling.

>Mary and the Witch's Flower recovered on Sunday and avoided a 30% drop in its second weekend, which would have been quite disappointing. So far, its performance is similar as When Marnie Was There, so it's currently heading for a total between ¥3.0-3.5 billion ($25-30 million+).

>Power Rangers really bombed, much more so than anticipated. I suppose it's not that surprising, since Japan has had Kamen Rider and Super Sentai for nearly 50 years now, but it's still a disastrous debut. It'll be a target of severe screen/showtime cuts now, so I'm guessing it'll finish around ¥300 million ($3 million) or so.

>Despicable Me 3 opened ahead of the weekend on Friday and delivered an encouraging first day; and based on Saturday's pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, is likely to dethrone Pirates of the Caribbean from atop the box office. Early ticket sales are up about 20% compared to Sing earlier this year, which is another great sign considering how well its impressive debut.

Illumination continues its surprising, and impressive, winning streak in the market, and dare I say it, have become just as successful as Walt Disney Animation and Pixar in Japan in recent years. Pixar, in particular, has struggled in the market this decade following several so-so received films, and audiences seem to be gravitating away from them as a result.

>Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales could still claim a fourth-consecutive week at #1 if it improves upon its early ticket sales, but either way - whether it repeats at #1 or falls to #2, its four week total will be very close to the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone.

>Gintama will play well in its second weekend, and if it can manage a 35% decline (or better), it's very likely headed for a total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million) since it's proven to be strong over the weekdays as well.

>Pokemon: I Choose You! is unlikely to avoid the typical ~50% decline that the franchise has always experienced in its second weekend, but that's certainly not a bad thing since its two-week total is looking to be 60%+ higher than last year's film, and higher than any Pokemon film since 2011/2012.

>Cars 3 appears to be headed for a second weekend decline that's much higher than the average Pixar film, and after some lackluster weekdays, it may end up finishing lower than about anyone anticipated.

VARIETY

TOKYO – “Despicable Me 3” opened atop the Japanese box office over the weekend, earning $5.4 million on 478,000 admissions.

The performance was nearly 10% better than the previous installment of the franchise, which made a total of $47 million in Japan in 2015. Distributed by Toho-Towa, “Despicable Me 3” bowed on 376 screens last Friday, scored a three-day total of $6.8 million on 605,748 admissions, and is expected to finish with a record for the series.

Weekend Actuals (07/22-23)

01 (---) ¥598,909,000 ($5.4 million), 0, ¥751,017,300 ($6.8 million), Despicable Me 3 (Toho-Towa) NEW

Despicable Me 3 delivered a clear first place debut, and set a new studio opening weekend record for Illumination, coming in 9% higher than 2015's Minions. The third entry in the ever popular Despicable Me franchise sold a very impressive 478,348 admissions over the weekend frame across 376 screens, and 605,748 admissions since opening on Friday. There's a good chance it'll exceed the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, especially given this time of year, which would make it only the third non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film to ever reach the mark (after Illumination's own Minions and Sing). Illumination continues its surprising, and impressive, winning streak in the market, and dare I say it, have become just as successful as Walt Disney Animation and Pixar in Japan in recent years.

>Despicable Me 3 delivered a clear first place debut, and set a new studio opening weekend record for Illumination, coming in 9% higher than 2015's Minions. >Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fell to second place in its fourth weekend of release, selling 224,054 admissions. After four weeks in release, the fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has exceeded 3.2 million admissions. The film should continue to post solid numbers throughout the remainder of summer, and is aiming for a total around ¥7 billion ($60 million+).
>Gintama comes in third place in its sophomore frame, but achieved a respectable second weekend coming off a holiday opening frame. Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime sold 238,995 admissions in its second weekend, and has exceeded 1.2 million admissions after just two weeks in release. The film is set to be another hit for WB, and is on track for a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million+).
>Pokemon: I Choose You! experienced the typical ~50% decline that the franchise almost always has in its second weekend, coming in fourth place in its second weekend with 212,248 admissions. After two weeks in release, the 20th film in the Pokemon franchise has already exceeded 1 million admissions -- this is over 60% higher than last year's film after two weeks, and ahead of every Pokemon film of the past five years. It's on track for a total around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million)
>Cars 3 suffers the worst second weekend decline of any Pixar release, and barely remained in the Top 5 in its second weekend. I'm not expecting it to recover too much, though it'll still receive a nice summer/Obon Festival boost, so it's likely going to finish just north of ¥2 billion (~$20 million). Very disappointing result.
>Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection oddly doesn't have an actual released yet, so its figure above is an estimate based on its estimated weekend admissions. If/When a number comes in, I'll update this post.

Your Name. had its last available total updated today, just two days before the film is released on DVD/Blu-Ray, to over ¥25 billion after 48 weeks in theatrical release. The film is still playing at a few locations, three after this upcoming Friday, but it's unlikely to go any higher given the home video release, so I'd take this updated total to be its final total unless otherwise reported at a later date. Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon became the fourth film in history to ever reach the incredible milestone of ¥25 billion.
