JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Night totally slowed down, -38% Saturday with holiday help and weekend drop will be over 40%

I know Japan is all about crazy legs, but could their be some frontloading even there because SW is a brand with a fanbase that would rush out OW? Or could this be a sign that WOM isnt that good?

I don't think it has to do with either of those two.

TFA 2nd weekend estimate (can't find any actuals posted by Corpse) was 0.726b, that's down a bit over 40%. It then rose on the third one. The other blockbuster on that weekend - Yo-Kay Watch - even dropped a bit more.

Corpse commented back then that it generally isn't a strong weekend, as holidays start afterwards. That time weekend was the 26th/27th though, now it's 23rd/24th, so I don't know if that makes any difference.

08 (---) ¥44,978,000 ($397,000), 0, ¥44,978,000 ($397,000), Kung Fu Yoga (Kadokawa) NEW
09 (07) ¥43,377,600 ($383,000), -44%, ¥912,396,950 ($8.1 million), Fullmetal Alchemist (Warner Bros.) WK4
10 (08) ¥37,058,800 ($327,000), -30%, ¥341,884,380 ($3.0 million), Girls und Panzer: The Finale - Part 1 (Showgate) WK3
11 (09) ¥30,312,400 ($268,000), -37%, ¥633,211,700 ($5.6 million), Detective in the Bar 3 (Toei) WK4

>Star Wars: The Last Jedi easily retained its position atop the box office; its second weekend of many to come. Episode VIII's 39% second weekend decline is an improvement over Episode VII's 42% decline, and trailed it by just 4%. However, its second weekend total is 17% behind Episode VII's due to the slightly earlier release date and not being able to capitalize on school break as early.

Comparison:
¥726 million ($6.0 million), -42%, ¥3.84 billion ($31.8 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens
¥696 million ($6.1 million), -39%, ¥3.20 billion ($28.3 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I don't expect Episode VIII will be able to catch Episode VII, but the results so far suggest it's going to finish relatively close to it (probably within 10-15%) compared to most other markets, and is aiming for a ¥9.5 billion ($80-85 million) total with a good shot at reaching the ¥10 billion uber-milestone still. Only Episodes I and VII achieved uber-status in the market.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King falls pretty hard, unsurprisingly, in its second weekend, but once again its an improvement over its predecessor's second weekend hold (this year by 10%). The continued improvement in legs, however, aren't enough to offset the substantial decline each film is having on opening weekend. The fourth film in the franchise will be aiming for ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) or so.

>The 8-Year Engagement enjoys an excellent second weekend, setting itself up for a very healthy run as New Year approaches. It's very likely to exceed ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura experienced another very strong hold after a 13% second weekend drop, decling just 11% in its third weekend. Takashi Yamazaki's latest didn't have the most exciting debut three weeks ago, but it's going to have the longevity to certainly make up for that. It's aiming for a total of ¥3 billion ($25 million+).

>Murder on the Orient Express held well in its third weekend of release, and is on track to exceed ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million), perhaps good enough for Japan to become its third strongest overseas market.

>Kamen Rider Generations: Build & Ex-Aid - Legend Riders is falling hard each week as every film in the franchise does, but it is holding every so slightly better than most, and it'll soon become the first film in the long-running series to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone in several years.

Indeed it isn't. Outside of Horror (generally not released in China) and Pixar (toxicity in China before Coco) of course.

Perhaps using the fact that most (maybe all?) Pixar films have grossed more in Japan than China, we can conclude that Coco will gross >$180m in Japan? :D:ph34r:

Nice, how is it pacing compared to The Force Awakens now? Could it's final gross end within 15% of TFA?

Well here is the equivalent days for TFA:

Weekday Estimates (01/04-08)

Monday Estimates (01/04)
¥285,000,000 ($2.38 million), +02%, ¥6,686,000,000 ($55.42 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 18
¥165,000,000 ($1.38 million), -27% ¥3,948,000,000 ($32.77 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) Day 17
¥84,000,000 ($701,000), -10%, ¥2,186,000,000 ($18.06 million), Orange (Toho) Day 24
¥39,000,000 ($328,000), +03%, ¥2,601,000,000 ($21.48 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 32
¥36,000,000 ($300,000), +56%, ¥1,315,000,000 ($10.91 million), Living With My Mother (Shochiku) Day 24

Tuesday Estimates (01/05)
¥160,000,000 ($1.35 million), -55%, ¥6,846,000,000 ($56.77 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney) Day 19
¥115,000,000 ($965,000), -57% ¥4,063,000,000 ($33.74 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories (Toho) Day 18
¥63,000,000 ($529,000), -50%, ¥2,249,000,000 ($18.59 million), Orange (Toho) Day 25
¥30,000,000 ($252,000), -26%, ¥425,000,000 ($3.53 million), Chibi Maruko-chan: The Movie (Toho) Day 15
¥18,000,000 ($151,000), -62%, ¥2,619,000,000 ($21.66 million), 007: Spectre (Sony) Day 33

% changes versus last week.

HOWEVER! Due to the calendar configuration, I'm pretty sure that they're not directly comparable as TLJ will have larger Wed-Fri than TFA. However I'd expect it to normalise somewhat after the weekend ends. TFA was at an estimated ¥8.241B after Friday, I reckon TLJ will be at maybe ¥6.2-¥6.7B, So down 18-24%. If it develops strong late legs, it could get within 20% of TFA, but am thinking 15% is a stretch. I also don't know what competition is coming up.

Note that Monday-Wednesday are bank holidays, and the weekend was severely down due to New years, with this weekend likely to increase into the double digits! TFA gained ¥619m on it's 4th weekend, but again it's 3rd weekend was the 1st/2nd January so was very large.

Based on the two-thirds of the market admissions compared to yesterday, TLJ is up 7% in admissions, so that would estimate roughly ¥295m for Wednesday, however I seem to remember that the first wednesday of every month is special in Japan. I may be misremembering that, but at the very least TLJ should be flat from yesterday.

@Olive Skywalker Can you fact check for me whether the first wednesday of each month is a thing? Thanks :)

EDIT: I misremembered, thanks Olive. TLJ heading for 290-300 today then

Looking at a roughly 40% drop for today based on 2/3 market attendance, going to say about ¥160-180m based on yesterday. Will likely drop again on Friday as I think new year/winter break comes to an end. Will post Corpse's estimates later when they come in.

"And the New Year boost is over, at least the weekday boost. Most workplaces reopened on Friday, following the New Year and Bank Holidays, so this Friday saw some big drops versus last Friday. However, the first weekend of January tends to be very strong, so expect this weekend to beat last weekend (which full actuals still aren't available yet due to the three consecutive holidays this past week) with likely increases across the board thanks to families/kids/teens flooding theaters before school begins again.

Also, excellent first day for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I don't think it'll beat Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the weekend (since it should increase, or remain flat at least), but it's going to easily outgross its predecessor. Japan may become one of its five strongest international markets."

% changes versus same weekend/day last week.

Force Awakens was at about ¥8.3b compared to TLJ's ¥6.2b, running at 25% behind at the moment with stronger competition. At this pace it should finish about ¥8.7b ($76.9m), roughly 75% of TFA's ¥11.58b ($102.4m) total. I'd say the range at the moment is about ¥8b - ¥9b ($70.7m - $79.6m), depending on whether late legs fall apart or it recovers well after a pretty decent opening from Kingsman. All USD are at todays exchange rate.
