JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Spring Break starts this week. In fact, Corpse is starting to post dailies in addition to the usual weekend forecasts/estimates/actuals.

Coco's future will be judged by its hold next weekend - it has to increase, no excuse.

To make things a little more interesting, Boss Baby is finally being released today in Japan. Will it provide more serious animated competition for Coco, or will it fizzle like most Dreamworks animated films in Japan? At the very least, Japan will help Boss Baby cross $500 million WW.

Note: Spring Break doesn't technically start until March 23rd/24th, but Wednesday is a national holiday and films are beginning to benefit from the Spring box-office season, so I'm posting the dailies a little early this year. The numbers (and holds/increases) will continue to grow as we get closer to April.

A few things to know about Spring Break and its impact on the Japanese Box-Office:

*Spring Break marks the end of the School Year in Japan, with the new School Year beginning in early April.
*Films targeting children (especially under 10) benefit the most, as seen above by Doraemon already experiencing huge increases. Films with significant audiences consisting of teens (students) also enjoy healthy gains during the lucrative season.
*Films that attract adult audiences see little benefit from the holiday period, but still see slight boosts.
*After the Big Three Holiday Periods of Golden Week, Obon Week, and New Year, Spring Break is the next in box-office revenue during the year.

Boss Baby is having a surprisingly strong opening day even factoring in the holiday. End of the Dreamworks slump in Japan?

It's released by Toho this time, and good promotion by distributor helped.

The big surprise?

Image

The Boss Baby, opening to about ¥300 million ($2.8 million) and in third place on its first day is without a doubt one of the biggest shockers I've ever seen at the Japan box office. I don't even have to do any research to declare this as the biggest single day for any Dreamworks Animation film ever in Japan by a huge margin (probably three times higher). In fact, its first day is bigger than the opening weekends of any Dreamworks Animation film.

If you follow the Japanese box-office, or just my thread, you'll know that outside of Disney and Pixar, and more recently Illumination..., western animated films never perform well in Japan. And it got so bad for studios like Dreamworks Animation, that their films stopped receiving theatrical releases entirely in 2012 due to their abysmal returns.

When Universal acquired distribution rights of Dreamworks Animation Studios, in turn that meant that Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) would then get those distribution rights in Japan because they own Universal's distribution rights in the market. The Boss Baby is Toho-Towa's first release following these acquisitions, and it's clearly a major win for them and Dreamworks Animation.

And here are my explanations:

>First Dreamworks Animation film to be released by Toho-Towa helped with marketing, and its overall release in theaters.
>First Dreamworks Animation film to even receive a wide theatrical release since 2012 may have created interest.
>Oscar nomination, maybe?
>The family aspect of the film perhaps appealed to audiences in Japan. Sibling relations are usually easy sells.
>It's Spring Break, and it opened on a holiday, so its first day would have obviously benefited... but this result?

It doesn't look like Coco is appealing as much to young kids compared to Doraemon and Boss Baby if the weaker matinee shows are any indication. The evenings have been very strong though, and skewing older will help with legs post Spring Break.

A bit surprised by how low it is opening in Japan, the game franchise was really associate with Sony/PlayStation in the past.

The first movie made 21M in Japan is best foreign market, 3M above UK almost doubling France/Germany.

Second movie made 15.85 in Japan this time by far is best foreign market, almost doubling UK/France and more than doubling Germany, above movie like X-men X-2, #17 Hollywood movies in Japan in 2003.

Look like this one could do less than $6M ? (that would already be adding 4 time this weekend at is total), maybe not $5M ?

Coco seems to have ended with 16M total (4M for the weekend), for an under -25% drop.

How good is that for Coco's legs and final run?

A very close race at the top of the box-office this weekend, with less than 15,000 admissions separating the top three films.

>Coco defends its reign atop the box-office, but this is the second-consecutive time that it's done so by ranking #2 over the weekend in terms of admissions (282,505). Its second weekend hold is strong, and its dailies have been good as well, so I'm pretty sure it'll exceed the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone.

>The Boss Baby debuts in a strong second place, though it actually ranked #1 over the weekend in terms of admissions with 286,556 tickets sold across 335 screens. Since opening on Wednesday, its five-day admissions reached 670,786. Its debut is by far the highest for a DreamWorks release, topping Shrek 2 by 24% despite opening on a Wednesday. It's still hard to project a finish after five days in release, but I expect it'll at least reach ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

Aside from Disney/Pixar, Japan is a market that imported animation was never able to attract a significant audience, but ever since local distributor Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) has gotten the rights for them (since they own distribution rights to Universal), Illumination and maybe now even DreamWorks is finally succeeding after decades of bombs and failure to land theatrical releases.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to third place in a very competitive weekend (272,200 admissions). The thirty-eighth has nothing to be worried about, though, as it's still tracking ahead of every other film in the series, and is likely to reach the ¥5 billion ($50 million) milestone.

>The Greatest Showman keeps on entertaining, surpassing Chicago to become the fifth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll pass The Phantom of the Opera possibly over next weekend to reach the fourth spot, and then go on to challenge La La Land for the third spot.

>Tomb Raider is so uninteresting that no actual has been released for it yet... I'l update it when the number is available.
