A very close race at the top of the box-office this weekend, with less than 15,000 admissions separating the top three films.

>Coco defends its reign atop the box-office, but this is the second-consecutive time that it's done so by ranking #2 over the weekend in terms of admissions (282,505). Its second weekend hold is strong, and its dailies have been good as well, so I'm pretty sure it'll exceed the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone.

>The Boss Baby debuts in a strong second place, though it actually ranked #1 over the weekend in terms of admissions with 286,556 tickets sold across 335 screens. Since opening on Wednesday, its five-day admissions reached 670,786. Its debut is by far the highest for a DreamWorks release, topping Shrek 2 by 24% despite opening on a Wednesday. It's still hard to project a finish after five days in release, but I expect it'll at least reach ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

Aside from Disney/Pixar, Japan is a market that imported animation was never able to attract a significant audience, but ever since local distributor Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) has gotten the rights for them (since they own distribution rights to Universal), Illumination and maybe now even DreamWorks is finally succeeding after decades of bombs and failure to land theatrical releases.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to third place in a very competitive weekend (272,200 admissions). The thirty-eighth has nothing to be worried about, though, as it's still tracking ahead of every other film in the series, and is likely to reach the ¥5 billion ($50 million) milestone.

>The Greatest Showman keeps on entertaining, surpassing Chicago to become the fifth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll pass The Phantom of the Opera possibly over next weekend to reach the fourth spot, and then go on to challenge La La Land for the third spot.

>Tomb Raider is so uninteresting that no actual has been released for it yet... I'l update it when the number is available.

Good for Coco. Maybe it can surpass Moana. The Boss Baby is a fun movie but very generic. I still can't believe it was nominated for an Oscars. Its quality and that of Coco's are a million miles apart. But hey, at least TBB is better than DM3. For me at least.

Weekend Actuals (03/18-19)
01 (---) ¥546,350,000 ($4.9 million), 0, ¥697,908,000 ($6.1 million), Sing (Toho-Towa) NEW
02 (01) ¥455,433,000 ($4.1 million), -23%, ¥1,655,500,100 ($14.8 million), Moana (Disney) WK2
03 (02) ¥381,033,500 ($3.4 million), -25%, ¥1,883,054,900 ($16.8 million), Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic (Toho) WK3
04 (03) ¥227,101,200 ($2.0 million), -24%, ¥2,970,021,300 ($26.5 million), La La Land (Gaga) WK4

Coco had the same percentage drop as Moana in its second weekend, which was also the weekend before Spring Break officially begins in Japan. Coco is actually slightly ahead of Moana's total at the same point in its run. Moana had larger weekends, but Coco had a boost from a holiday last Wednesday.

Looks like Coco will do well but it’s not a return to form for Pixar in Japan it seems

Let's see if Toy Story 4 would be able to do the job of returning Pixar to top form in Japan, maybe at least as the #2 foreign animation studio in Japan. The top spot is currently held by its sister studio Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS).

Any insights on Jumanji's box office performance in Japan? Release is on April 6. If it can gross $50 million+, then the movie will officially join the billion dollar club.

This is what Corpse had to say about Jumanji's prospects in Japan.

Quote
I was looking into it some following my previous post, and I have less confidence it it now. For being a huge success in the U.S. and also in many other markets, its interest in Japan appears to be very low by not even being among the Top 100 searched for films right now on a couple popular movie sites (its "likes" are also low). Its release date isn't very good, either, since opening between Spring Break and Golden Week kinda shows the lack of confidence in its box office potential.

Sony being the distributor is worrying, too. They just haven't been capable of really turning out any notable performances outside of Spider-Man and Resident Evil in recent years.

Maybe things will prove differently once its release day gets closer, but $20 million is probably as much as it'll manage if things go well.

Highest-Grossing DreamWorks Animation Films:

¥2.50 billion ($22.4 million) - Shrek 2 (2004)
¥2.27 billion ($18.1 million) - Shrek (2001)
¥2.05 billion ($26.1 million) - Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
¥2.00 billion ($17.2 million) - Kung Fu Panda (2008)
¥1.88 billion ($17.6 million) - Shark Tale (2005)
¥1.55 billion ($12.6 million) - Shrek the Third (2007)
¥1.17 billion ($14.0 million) - Puss in Boots (2012)
¥1.10 billion ($7.9 million) - Over the Hedge (2006)
¥1.08 billion ($13.6 million) - Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
¥1.05 billion ($10.0 million) - The Boss Baby (2018) [Estimate After 7 Days]
¥1.02 billion ($10.7 million) - Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2009)
¥1.00 billion ($11.9 million) - Shrek Forever After (2011)

I never thought this list would ever see an update again, since DreamWorks Animation was basically pronounced dead, but six-years later...The Boss Baby is almost locked to outgross Shrek 2 to become the highest-grossing DreamWorks Animation release in Japan fourteen-years later.

Pretty sad list, though, without a single DreamWorks Animation film ever being an actual success, with Shrek 2 coming in 18th for the year in 2004, the highest ranking on any yearly list for the studio. DreamWorks Animation doesn't even have a single film among the Top 100 highest-grossing animated films in Japan, either, and you'd have to go as far as a Top 150 list to find one (Shrek 2).

Following many disastrous performances, Paramount and Fox largely* stopped distributing DreamWorks Animation releases in Japan, and none of their films from mid-2012 onward were able to find local distributors due to the financial risk. The Boss Baby is DreamWorks Animation's first theatrical release in the market since 2012, following local distributor Toho-Towa acquiring distribution rights of DreamWorks Animation films by owning the distribution rights of Universal properties in the market.

*Fox did release Penguins of Madagascar in the market, but it was a limited release and missed opening within the Top 20.

NOTE: The Wed-to-Wed drops are large because last Wednesday was a national holiday (Vernal Equinox Day). The day itself though is very good, and percentage wise (versus a typical Monday/Tuesday) is a bit stronger than a usual Wednesday.

Coco finally takes over Boss Baby. Hopefully that theme is here to stay

Since TBB released, it's been a tight fight for #1, #2 & #3 among the three of them. It's gonna be interesting to see which get the final victory at the end.

I have the feeling Coco is selling less tickets but making more money (more expensive tickets). While TBB and Doraemon are selling more tickets but making less money (cheaper tickets).

I just want Coco to make the most money it can from Japan to reach 800M ww, and have a very long healthy big run ... but at this point i don't think Coco will blast box office to 100M levels or so.  :(

Unless Coco WOM explodes, at the end Doraemon will be #1, Coco #2 and TBB a much lower #3. Boss baby should die almost completely after spring break finishes theoretically as it is skewing very young. Doraemon is already ahead as it opened two weeks prior and is on par at the moment.

Unless you're talking about who will win over spring break in its entirety, in which case yes it will be a tight fight for victory

Yes, i meant the holidays. Since Doraemon is clearly ahead of Coco and TBB. And also Coco is well ahead of TBB.
