>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, the twenty-second film in the long-running franchise, obliterates the competition and delivers one of the biggest (fifth) opening weekend in the past ten years. Its number fell slightly versus estimates, but it still set a franchise opening record and is only the fourth domestic film to ever debut with over 1 million admissions, and only the third overall film to do so since 2007, selling an incredible 1,012,000 admissions across 384 screens. And since opening early on Friday, its 3-day total admissions reached 1,289,000.

The Detective Conan films have some frontloading to them, but only achieving the standard multiplier in the series will allow it to exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million+) on close to 5.5 million admissions. If it can manage just slightly better legs than some of its predecessors, it might be able to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi to take the yearly crown (so far).

>Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion delivered a good second place debut, selling 314,648 admissions over the weekend frame on 354 screens. And since opening early on Friday, it has sold 334,196 admissions. Its debut is 12% higher than last year's film, and it'll be aiming for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>Coco holds extraordinarily well in its fifth weekend against a ton of new competition, much, much better than last year's Moana and Sing, both of which fell 40% against Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-chan on this weekend last year. It appears increasingly likely that Pixar/Disney's latest hit may very well reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone.

>Pacific Rim: Uprising debuts in fourth place on 192,791 admissions on 581 screens, and while that may seem disappointing (and it kinda is), it's better than its predecessor opening in fifth place, and its opening weekend is actually 19% higher than it, too. It'll finish around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), similar to the original film.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island falls to seventh place, but like last year's film, managed to mostly survive this weekend when most of its predecessors collapse in week seven. Also, the thirty-eighth film in the long-running franchise exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone, becoming the first film in the series to reach this mark -- remarkable.

>The Greatest Showman continues along its incredible path of success, and has surpassed La La Land to become the third highest-grossing live-action musical in the market. It'll be a bit difficult, but it, too, may also reach the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone if it holds onto enough screens in the coming few weeks.

How RPO looking this weekend?

From Corpse:

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will easily earn a second weekend atop the box-office, but that's not surprisingly whatsoever. Friday was "close", but Detective Conan will probably double it over the weekend frame.

Ready Player One is up about 17% versus Pacific Rim: Uprising last week, which is a good sign that it can debut above ¥300 million this weekend. A ¥300 million+ debut a week before Golden Week begins will be enough to probably get it above the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, but a ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total would certainly be doable, too.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will easily repeat atop the box-office after its record opening weekend last week, and may set a second weekend franchise record. Its cumulative total will be right around the ¥3 billion milestone after its second weekend, which puts it on track to exceed the ¥7 billion ($65 million) milestone.

>Ready Player One isn't going to breakout, but as long as it comes in above ¥300 million over the weekend frame, it'll probably be good enough to maintain solid theater presence through the upcoming Golden Week holiday period (beginning April 29th) to reach a respectable ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) total.

>Coco will remain in the Top 5 in its sixth weekend of release, and after Sunday, will have outgrossed a number of previous Pixar films, such as Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Inside Out. It'll probably continue to play well over the next few weeks, and the Golden Week holiday period just might benefit it enough to reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone.

>The Greatest Showman will celebrate its tenth-weekend in the Top 10, and while it won't be able to climb an higher than fourth on the all-time highest-grossing live-action musical chart, its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone is looking pretty good.

10 (07) ¥46,000,000 ($425,000), -58%, ¥5,100,000,000 ($47.6 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island (Toho) WK8

Yikes at most of the drops this weekend. The weekend before Golden Week begins (April 29th) can often see steep declines, and while these are pretty similar to the past few years, I just thought they'd be a little better since GW is a day later than last year. Golden Week is one of the three strongest weeks of the year at the box-office, so the days leading up to it are typically weaker than normal.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, however, held just fine, and if estimates hold, actually held better than most of its predecessors in its second weekend (including the last two films). It'll achieve the biggest second weekend in the Detective Conan franchise, and should earn itself the eighth biggest second weekend for an animated film if it holds. Expect a total between ¥7-7.5 billion ($65-70 million) with 5.5 million+ admissions.

>Ready Player One came in a little better than my forecast, and delivered a very respectable second place debut. As long as it's not unusually frontloaded, it should be on target to finish around ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) with the benefit of Golden Week coming up soon.

>Coco was holding better than many past Spring Disney/Pixar/Illumination releases, but it fell inline with most of them in its sixth weekend of release -- although a sub-50% drop is better than films like Moana or Sing. This drop does, however, make reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone fairly difficult, so it needs a very healthy Golden Week if it wants to achieve that goal.

>Pacific Rim: Uprising may have made some history this weekend, and not the kind it wants to be known for. It's very likely to have dropped over 60% in its second weekend, which is already one of the biggest second weekend drops I can recall for a major wide release, but if it comes in closer to 65%... I'm willing to bet it's a Top 5 all-time worst second weekend decline. I'll do some research into this over the next few days.

>The Greatest Showman is pretty much in the same situation as Coco regarding its chance of reaching the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone. Its drop this weekend is "fine", but it'll be entering its eleventh weekend and will fall out of the Top 10 next week, so it could end up suffering severe screen/showtime cuts... We'll see, it'll be close.

Weekend Actuals (04/21-22)
01 (01) ¥820,184,900 ($7.6 million), -37%, ¥3,233,128,800 ($30.0 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK2

04 (04) ¥135,240,900 ($1.3 million), -46%, ¥4,206,154,700 ($39.4 million), Coco (Disney) WK6
05 (---) ¥124,000,000 ($1.2 million), 0, ¥159,846,600 ($1.5 million), Inuyashiki (Toho) NEW
06 (03) ¥100,177,300 ($929,000), -64%, ¥634,662,500 ($6.0 million), Pacific Rim: Uprising (Toho-Towa) WK2
07 (06) ¥84,836,300 ($786,000), -49%, ¥3,025,211,900 ($28.3 million), The Boss Baby (Toho-Towa) WK5
08 (05) ¥76,757,300 ($711,000), -55%, ¥962,535,500 ($9.0 million), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Sony) WK3
09 (08) ¥57,594,200 ($534,000), -32%, ¥4,713,316,900 ($44.2 million), The Greatest Showman (Fox) WK10
10 (07) ¥46,056,700 ($427,000), -58%, ¥5,093,207,000 ($47.6 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island (Toho) WK8

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer dominated the weekend once again, delivering another franchise weekend record, along with achieving the eighth biggest second weekend in the past ten years, selling an additional 620,000 admissions. The twenty-second film in the long-running franchise is now tracking 17% ahead of last year's film, which puts it on course to reach the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone on 6 million+ admissions. It's very likely now to outgross Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and is setting the bar very high for the Summer tentpoles to compete against.

>Ready Player One debuted in a distant second place, but its debut is pretty good due to an absurd avg. ticket price of ¥1710 ($15.90) from strong 3D/IMAX shares, selling 214,973 admissions over the weekend frame across 745 screens, and 282,618 admissions since opening on Friday. This opening isn't the home-run start for Spielberg's latest, but with the Golden Week holidays coming up soon, it has a good chance of reaching the ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) mark, which is respectable.

>Coco remains steady in fourth place, and while the 46% decline is higher than expected given its prior weekend holds, it's still a bit better than other Spring animated releases from Disney/Pixar and Illumination which tend to drop 50% or more on this weekend each year. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone have become a bit more slim as a result of this hold, but it's still doable if it can benefit enough from Golden Week.

>Inuyakashi rounds out the Top 5 with a mediocre debut, selling just 90,101 admissions over the weekend across 313 screens, and 119,809 admissions since opening on Friday.

>Pacific Rim: Uprising experienced one of the worst second weekend holds I can remember for a major wide release (300+ theaters), and I'm willing to bet it's possibly in the Top 10 on that list. This disastrous hold even puts its ¥1 billion ($10 million) chances in jeopardy, meaning its multiplier might not reach even 3.5... truly a pathetic result following its decent debut (which was higher than the original!).

>The Greatest Showman holds strong in its tenth weekend of release, and I believe it'll be able to crawl over the ¥5 billion ($45 million+) blockbuster milestone before its incredible run comes to an end.

Corpse (for IW fans) :

After checking showtimes at various locations this weekend, Avengers: Infinity War and Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (despite being in its third week) appear to have similar showings/seating allocation over the weekend. Avengers has the advantage on Friday by occupying the biggest screens (the 500-700+ auditoriums) at the majority of locations, but Detective Conan is taking most of them back on Saturday and Sunday.

Japan is not a superhero movie country. Not a big surprise IW is not getting a special treat, mainly when there's a local monster blockbuster rolling on the big boxoffice wave.

What's to be expected for IW from Japan? 20-25M max? Coco is on its way to 47M or so.

IW has Spider-Man in it, so I'm guessing it will gross a little higher than Ultron. Probably in the range of $30-35 million.

Some very rough estimates based on admissions at 14:30 are that Infinity War is heading to about roughly $2m OD (¥200m)

although depends how fast it accelerates in the evening

Is that good enough? I mean compare to other Avengers movies.

Should outgross both avengers. OD looks more like $2.5m now with maybe $8m or so 3-day. Looking at $35m total above both Avengers.

My final estimate:

¥280m-¥320m ($2.5-2.9m) all dependent on average ticket price, since there seemed to be some special screenings which were about 25% of the admissions.

Should get a corpse update in a few hours who should have a better gauge. This is a fantastic start though!

ticket price will be very high thanks to IMAX/4D previews

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I used a ¥1750 avg. for the top end as that was similar to RPO last weekend which had a lot of IMAX etc. also
