It's interesting that Greece and Japan both STILL have the original Spider-Man trilogy at the top of their superhero charts. Does anyone know if this is true in any other country?

Part  2 of the Godzilla anime opened lower probably because audiences know they can watch it on Netflix in a few months. No worries, it probably made back profit with the Netflix deal. Whatever these films do at the box office is extra gravy for Toho most likely.

Not much happening this weekend, although it's looking likely that Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will, once again, reign atop the box-office. If it does, this will be its sixth-weekend at #1 in revenue, and seventh-consecutive weekend at #1 in admissions. And whether it achieves another weekend on top or not isn't going to keep it from surpassing Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the weekend to become the highest-grossing film of the year.

What a Wonderful Family! 3, the third film in the series from renowned director, Yoji Yamada, should debut with a similar opening as its predecessors, which will be enough for second or third place.

Avengers: Infinity War will likely be within ¥100 million of outgrossing The Avengers to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market after Sunday.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer claims its sixth-non-consecutive weekend atop the box-office in revenue, and its seventh-consecutive weekend at #1 in admissions. It surpassed Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the weekend to become the highest-grossing film of 2018. Besides not setting an opening day record for the franchise (due to being the first to open on a Friday), the twenty-second film in the series has broken literally every other record in the franchise, right down to every single daily since day 2.

>Peter Rabbit held quite well, and has set itself up for a likely total above the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

>What a Wonderful Family! 3 settles for a third place start, debuting in third place to 112,000 admissions across 336 screens (and 153,000 since opening on Friday). This is 4% below its predecessor.

>After the Rain comes in fourth place, selling 85,876 admissions over the weekend frame on 301 screens (and 116,266 since opening on Friday). Obviously nothing exciting, but any opening above ¥100 million this time of year is usually seen as "solid".

>Avengers: Infinity War is holding on decently, and will surpass The Avengers next weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

>My Friend "A" hasn't had its actual for the weekend frame released yet, but it ranked 5th in admissions over the weekend. And since its 3-day total has been released, I'm projecting it'll come in 6th place in revenue for the weekend. I'll update when its weekend figure is released.

>Rampage basically bombed last weekend, and its second weekend drop is pretty alarming. It's barely going to finish above ¥500 million (probably shy of $5 million).

>Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Ch. III debuted in 9th place over the weekend in admissions, but its weekend gross hasn't been released yet -- not surprising given its a limited release from Showgate. I'll update when (or if) its number is released.

>Deadpool 2 is going to be a bright spot in an upcoming dump of new releases in June. Based on pre-sales, it should also have a healthy retention versus its predecessors' debut, likely dropping less than 20%, if not 15%.

>50 First Kisses, a Japanese remake of 2004's 50 First Dates, is going to benefit from the lack of teen/young female-oriented films in recent weeks (or months, really), and should deliver a decent debut for this time of year. It's also possible this one could develop some strong legs, since this genre typically does and this demo is very under-served right now.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will finally be dethroned in its eighth-weekend of release. It has been holding very well over the weekdays despite being past the play-cycle of most entries in the franchise, and it appears to deliver another good hold this weekend as well. It will have broken the franchise record by nearly ¥1 billion after Sunday, and have exceeded a 6 multiplier, which is typically very difficult for this series. It's going to comfortably to exceed the ¥8 billion next weekend, and I believe it's very likely to end up with the yearly crown.

>Over Drive is a bomb, and now I'm questioning why I even considered it a potential contender in dethroning Detective Conan. It'll be lucky to debut in the Top 5.

>Avengers: Infinity War is going to experience a severe decline in its sixth-weekend, and drop near the bottom of the Top 10; however, it will surpass The Avengers over the weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

Weekend Actuals (06/02-03)

02 (---) ¥141,000,000 ($1.3 million), 0, ¥185,456,800 ($1.7 million), 50 First Kisses (Sony) NEW
03 (01) ¥120,401,200 ($1.1 million), -33%, ¥7,861,446,600 ($72.0 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK8
04 (02) ¥93,597,200 ($853,000), -36%, ¥789,878,300 ($7.2 million), Peter Rabbit (Sony) WK3
05 (03) ¥78,817,000 ($719,000), -38%, ¥505,734,100 ($4.6 million), What a Wonderful Family! 3 (Shochiku) WK2
06 (04) ¥75,600,600 ($689,000), -38%, ¥377,676,100 ($3.4 million), After the Rain (Toho) WK2
07 (---) ¥75,000,000 ($685,000), 0, ¥118,512,400 ($1.1 million), Over Drive (Toho) NEW
08 (06) ¥56,823,200 ($518,000), -25%, ¥248,087,400 ($2.3 million), My Friend "A" (Gaga) WK2
09 (12) ¥52,226,000 ($476,000), +44%, ¥412,141,400 ($3.7 million), Then Youth, But Youth (Nikkatsu) WK4
10 (05) ¥31,601,700 ($288,000), -60%, ¥3,622,966,200 ($33.1 million), Avengers: Infinity War (Disney) WK6

>Deadpool 2 easily debuts atop the box-office, and nearly matched the opening weekend of the original, coming just 2% shy of matching its debut. Deadpool's second outing sold a solid 239,215 admissions over the weekend frame on 789 screens, and 396,062 admissions since opening on Friday. I expect the film to be frontloaded like the vast majority of superhero films in the market, but it could once again reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone.

>50 First Kisses, a Japanese remake of 2004's 50 First Dates, came in comfortably above estimates, and ended up enjoying a decent opening weekend. It sold 96,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 321 screens, and 136,848 admissions since opening on Friday. I don't believe Sony will earn a much needed ¥1 billion (~$10 million) earner with this film, but the genre can develop strong legs, so there is at least a slight chance it reaches the milestone.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer falls to third place, finally being dethroned in its eighth-weekend of release, selling an additional 87,000 admissions to exceed 6 million. As of this weekend, it has broken the franchise record by nearly ¥1 billion, and is comfortably to exceed the ¥8 billion next weekend. Unless we see a surprise breakout in the second-half of 2018, the twenty-second film in the Detective Conan franchise will likely win the yearly crown.

>Over Drive is a major bomb, so much so that it hasn't had its official weekend figure released yet... Since opening on Friday, though, its 3-day admissions were 93,221 from playing on 302 screens. When its weekend gross is released, I'll come back and update it.

>Avengers: Infinity War collapsed in its sixth-weekend of release, but not before surpassing The Avengers over the weekend to become the highest-grossing, non-Spider-Man, Marvel/DC film in the market.

09 (06) ¥52,118,100 ($475,000), -31%, ¥508,454,500 ($4.6 million), After the Rain (Toho) WK3
10 (05) ¥47,145,500 ($429,000), -40%, ¥703,866,100 ($6.4 million), What a Wonderful Family! 3 (Shochiku) WK3

>Shoplifters, the latest from director Hirokazu Takeba (The Third Murderer, Like Father, Like Son), delivered a great debut, and certainly one of the most surprising of 2018 so far. The film sold an impressive 350,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 34 screens, and after Friday's numbers and last weekend's previews (very rare occurrence), brought its admissions up to 613,582.

I never doubted this film would do solid business, Takaba's award-winning films typically deliver solid box-office results, but this is definitely breakout territory and I could see it reaching ¥3 billion ($30 million), which will be more than enough to be the top grossing May and June release this year.

>Deadpool 2 held pretty well in its second weekend, and has already exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone. It's not locked yet, and I'd probably just consider it a 50/50 chance still, but the possibility of reaching the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, and matching the original, is looking doable.

>50 First Kisses was likely to hold well given its genre, but a sub-10% second weekend drop is incredibly impressive. Its opening weekend was slightly lower than I expected and I didn't think it could reach the ¥1 billion milestone, but it's probably going to get there now.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to kill it at the box-office, remaining in the Top 5 in its ninth-weekend of release after an excellent decline. It is now only the second domestic franchise animated film to ever exceed the ¥8 billion milestone, and unless it experiences a harsh drop soon, it's probably going to outgross Stand By Me, Doraemon (¥8.38 billion) to become the highest-grossing domestic franchise film of all-time! And as I've mentioned recently, this film is likely to take the 2018 yearly crown.

07 (04) ¥75,000,000 ($675,000), -26%, ¥8,225,000,000 ($75.3 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK10

10 (07) ¥46,000,000 ($415,000), -34%, ¥1,025,000,000 ($9.3 million), Peter Rabbit (Sony) WK5

>Hirokazu Takeba's Shoplifters is going to secure itself a second weekend atop the weekend box-office, and following its very impressive weekdays (roughly 30% higher than its opening weekend), it's almost certain to have a very long performance ahead. It's still a bit early, but a total north of ¥3 billion ($30 million) has become likely. Takeba has definitely become one of Japan's most reliable directors at the box-office, following several critically acclaimed releases.

>Recall, based on the novel by Jun Ikeido, had a decent start yesterday, and has some solid pre-sales today, indicating that it'll enjoy a respectable debut in second place. If this one does come in over ¥200 million this weekend, then this year's June has outperformed the month's usual poor results.

>Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Wonder finally reach Japan, and both seem set for decent enough debuts. The Maze Runner franchise never gained any traction in Japan, so if it can hit ¥100 million this weekend, it'd be a success. And Wonder, being released by the independent distributor Kino Films, should do pretty well for itself as well.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer keeps on holding very well, and is coming closer and closer to becoming the highest-grossing domestic, animated franchise film ever. Currently in its tenth week of release, it looks possible that it'll achieve twelve weeks in total in the Top 10.
