I see the chance of Bohemian reclaiming the top is higher if Love Live Sunshine underperform.

Bohemian up 112% from last's week, if the momentum keep on, this weekend maybe higher than any weekend before.

Looks more likely , the stat in yesterday is even outperform the original Love Live's Day 1 stat.

Ralph also have slight chance also overtake it too.

More worrisome stat I gathered, no sold out happened yet in major chain in Tokyo nor Namazu (that the current series taken place in) excluding the live viewings of stage greeting on day 1. (Original series did have multiple sold out in day 1 on pre-sale period). So I suspect if they can hit a 3m mark despite their cd sales looked well (helped by event lottery heavily however).

This weekend is likely ended up in a crazy three-way-finish outta my expectations.

Although Bohemian looked to poise top in yesterday stat but looked might not be the case after the day performance of Ralph and Sunshine.

(Edited Jan 7, 19)

Many were surprised Sunshine did far less than the predecessor despite most viewers' response were positive (I mean not biased to gift, but a real one)

Seemed either Love Live's Staff epic miss to put a sub-group fanmeeting in Chiba, which overlapping day 2/3? Or viewers were just too afraid what happened in original movie will too happen here too? (Big Spoilers of two series and related groups thus not tomention here)

(Note: unlike predecessor's fanmeeting on Chiba which on same day of movie, the subgroup fanmeeting is NOT packaged with movie airing)

I don't want to keep delaying these any longer, so here are all available numbers. Nearly everything is available for this past weekend, besides the actual for Love! Live Sunshine!!, but the majority of 12/29-30 is just an estimate. Therefore, the weekend % changes for 01/05-06 are technically estimates. The only official numbers released for the last weekend of December are the weekend grosses for the top 4 films (and they're rounded...), and the total (also rounded) for Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm doubtful that any more figures for the last weekend of Dec. will be released, but if they are, I'll update them in this post.

Having said all of that...

>Bohemian Rhapsody continues to have one of the best runs ever, and you could argue it's having the best run ever on record considering its running multiplier remains above every other film recorded (~2000-). Its ninth weekend is its first that's fallen below its opening weekend, but just barely (5% less), so it's still hard to project where the film may be headed, especially after its Golden Globe wins. A total above the ¥10 billion (~$90 million) uber-blockbuster milestone is 100% locked up, and I could see it reaching as high as ¥12 billion (~$110 million).

>Ralph Breaks the Internet has been performing well, and will outgross the original film in a week or so. It's on track for a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million+). This will be Walt Disney Animation's fourth-consecutive film to decline in the market, but it'll still be a good total that's the standard milestone for most imported animated films that don't breakout.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly fell rather hard in its fourth weekend, but that's perhaps unsurprising since New Year gave it a pretty nice boost. Its four week total is 2.2% above its predecessor, Resurrection F, and I expect it'll remain ahead for the remainder of its run and become the highest grossing film in the franchise. Expect a total around ¥3.8 billion ($34/35 million).

>Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is still holding on well, and after seven weeks in release, is tracking just 9% behind the original. It has run very consistent with the first film, and should finish around ¥6.7 billion (~$60 million). If it can manage to crawl to ¥6.87 billion, it'll outgross Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, but that'll be difficult. Regardless, the film performed very well in Japan.

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER, while as frontloaded as pretty much any other film in the long-running franchise, is on its way to becoming one of the highest grossing films in the series. I'll do some research in the coming weeks to see just how high it ranks.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - II is aiming to debut in high fashion, having already sold through 38% of its available tickets ahead of the weekend. It's playing on only 131 screens. Its pre-sales are almost identical to the first film (1% higher), which is very impressive because sequels in these multi-part animated series' rarely match the success of the first film. If it does end up opening on par, or even higher than, the original, it's a testament to the loyalty and size of this franchise's devoted fanbase.

Bohemian Rhapsody... It appears to be headed for a mostly flat weekend, again, in its tenth weekend of release. If the forecast is accurate, it'll end up achieving the sixth or seventh biggest tenth weekend on record. Its ten week multiplier will also be the highest on record (25.75) for any film after ten weeks in release. There's still no stopping this film at the box office.

Creed II is looking good for a Top 4 debut, and based on early numbers, it'll more than double (possibly triple) the opening weekend of the first film. That does sound very impressive (and it is), but the first film didn't receive nearly as wide of a release as the new film, so it's not fair to compare the two films, unfortunately.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly will probably see another fairly steep decline, and that's unlikely to change for the duration of its run. Not unexpected, of course, and it's still on track to surpass its predecessor to become the highest grossing film in the franchise.

A Star is Born really could have used some more Golden Globes love, and unless it begins to sweep at the guilds, and finally at the Academy Awards, I'm afraid its run will soon come to an end in the market. Poorly timed release, it should have been in February or March.

05 (---) ¥x90,000,000 ($830,000), 0, ¥120,000,000 ($1.1 million), Creed II (Warner Bros.) NEW
06 (05) ¥x86,000,000 ($795,000), -30%, ¥760,000,000 ($7.0 million), A Banana? At This Time of Night? (Toho) WK3

10 (06) ¥x66,000,000 ($610,000), -34%, ¥1,345,000,000 ($12.2 million), Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER (Toei) WK3

A very close battle for the #1 spot this weekend between the debut of Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - II (which sold though 51% of its available tickets) and the tenth weekend for Bohemian Rhapsody which increased once again (its fifth time doing so). I'm betting on Fate/stay night to edge out a victory in gross due to its very high average ticket price, but Bohemian Rhapsody will almost certainly come out on top in admissions.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Weekly Performance
WK01: ¥354.3 million ($3.2 million)
WK02: ¥388.5 million ($3.4 million), +10%, ¥1.321 billion ($11.7 million)
WK03: ¥395.0 million ($3.5 million), +02%, ¥2.336 billion ($20.8 million)
WK04: ¥496.0 million ($4.4 million), +26%, ¥3.323 billion ($29.4 million)
WK05: ¥505.1 million ($4.5 million), +02%, ¥4.394 billion ($38.9 million)
WK06: ¥431.5 million ($3.8 million), -15%, ¥5.362 billion ($47.4 million)
WK07: ¥389.1 million ($3.5 million), -10%, ¥6.255 billion ($55.3 million)
WK08: ¥364.0 million ($3.3 million), -07%, ¥7.200 billion ($63.8 million)
WK09: ¥335.8 million ($3.1 million), -08%, ¥8.457 billion ($75.3 million)
WK10: ¥402.0 million ($3.7 million), +20%, ¥9.205 billion ($82.2 million)

Creed II looks to have settled for a #5 debut, and while it's a bit of a disappointing result, especially since I doubt it reached ¥100 million, it's still much more than the original (more than double) due to a much wide release.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly held well, and any small chance that remained of it failing to outgross Resurrection F to become the highest grossing film in the franchise are pretty much gone now. It still won't reach ¥4 billion, but it'll comfortably break ¥3.8 billion now I believe.

Am i seeing this right? Is that seriously an 84% jump for BR???

It calculated on a 3-day base taking Sat - Mon. This monday is a holiday and last weeks monday wasn't, thats why the jump is so big.

Imagine what a cursed child adaptation with the original cast can do in Japan. Also, when is Aquaman supposed to premiere?

I think it would be massive everywhere with the OG cast members! Nostalgia would help so much even though it hasn't been that long really.

Alright, so Monday's national holiday has delayed some of the numbers again this week. Only the Top 3 films have had their weekend actual released, and weekend grosses for films ranked 4th-10th remain estimates (marked with an asterisk *). All the cumulative totals are actuals as of Monday, except for Love! Live Sunshine! Over the Rainbow which hasn't had any numbers released yet. Estimates will be replaced with Actuals when available.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II - Lost Butterfly debuts atop the box office in a big way, nearly reaching ¥500 million over the weekend frame. The second film in the series sold 276,795 admissions over the weekend on only 131 screens, achieving an incredible average ticket price of ¥1,772 ($16.34). After Monday, it has sold 363,080 admissions. The sequel came in 18.8% higher than its predecessor, and it should finish above the ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) mark and has a shot at reaching ¥2 billion ($20 million) as well.

>Bohemian Rhapsody holds... well, increases, in its tenth weekend of release, selling a further 272,344 admissions over the weekend frame. It achieved the third biggest tenth weekend gross ever recorded, and its ten week multiplier has now reached 26.63, the fifth highest multiplier ever recorded. It has sold 6,836,433 admissions after 67 days in release. There's still no sign of it showing any signs of slowing down, at least noticeably, so the sky continues to be the limit. At the very least, it'll probably exceed ¥12 billion (~$110 million), but don't be surprised if it goes higher.

>Ralph Breaks the Internet is still performing pretty well, and outgrossed the original over the weekend. It has sold 2,641,967 admissions after 25 days in release. Expect it to finish right around the ¥4 billion ($36/37 million).

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly also keeps doing very well at the box office, and it's now just over ¥100 million away from outgrossing Resurrection F to become the highest grossing film in the franchise. It has sold 2,823,219 admissions after 32 days in release. I expect a bit of a free fall from this point forward, and still expect it to fall barely shy of ¥4 billion, around ¥3.9 billion ($35/36 million), but it's doable if Toei keeps it going.

>Creed II's weekend gross remains an estimate, but its four-day cumulative total is posted above. Overall, a bit of a disappointing debut, but it's much higher then the first film due to a wider release, and if it can reach ¥500 million ($4.5 million), I'd consider it a modest success.

And finally, very importantly: the editor of the MovieWalker film website is saying that Bohemian Rhapsody is going to remain a 2018 release, while Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released close enough to the end of the Japan Box Office fiscal year that it'll be counted as a 2019 release. Sooooo... Congratulations to Bohemian Rhapsody on becoming 2018's Highest Grossing Film!
