>Ride Your Wave came in a bit higher than estimates, but its debut is still pretty disappointing given Toho's apparent confidence in it based on its impressive screen/showtime counts. It only sold 62,719 admissions over the weekend across 299 screens.

It's a real shame about this one. I would've thought Masaaki Yuasa had garnered a wider audience since Devilman Crybaby. But he's been making project after project at breakneck speed, and there has to be some sort of audience fatigue surrounding how quickly each of his films are coming out. Think about it--Lu Over The WallThe Night is Short, Walk On GirlDevilman Crybaby, and Ride Your Wave all in fairly short succession from one another? Something's gotta give. Satoshi Kon, for example, did a much better job spacing out his releases, at least from what I know.

I'm a huge Yuasa fan and I didn't even know this existed. I think it more has to do with the fact that this is probably the least marketed of all his recent movies (maybe it's different in Japan though).

Friday is +15% over Aladdin's OD.

Will likely be more frontloaded, but very good start.

Oh didn't know it released in Japan as well.

Besides, OD is less than Homecoming, maybe that was some holiday as Saturday and Sunday dropped from Friday. Shall do $8.5mn 3 days I guess.

SH films are always frontloaded in Japan.

Homecoming just over 6x the 2-day, so it seems like this debut would put it in reasonable contention to beat IW and enter top 5 live action SH.

Aladdin is still going strong with Spidey opening. I guess that's expected since the core demo for those 2 movies aren't really the same. Also, it's very rare for a Hollywood movie to open earlier in Japan than in NA, isn't it? It happened to Pikachu, but it's Pokemon so that's a special case.

Isn't Spidey the most popular SH in Japan? Maybe the studio knows it so they opened earlier this time.

Yeah, but it's not that popular to have an earlier release. I think it's more because of what are waiting in July for summer holiday. TS4 and Weathering With You both have potentials to make ¥10b+. While late June to early July is empty.
