EG is similar to TA in that it blows away market specific expectations for what a movie in its genre can do.

I'm jokingly suggesting that the pattern in incomplete and we'll still get a 3rd film later on that takes what people think is possible for a superhero movie in each market and smashes through that.

I know Obon fell right on the weekdays, but it's still odd to see all movies dropping >10%.

Corpse said 50-50. I would agree. Depends on how it holds after Obon and after summer is over.

I want it to get there, cause the movie was sooo good. Not as spectacular as Your Name, but almost there. It actually had similar structure and feels as Your Name, but with different theme and different elements as plot devices, and also a bit darker. I think that's the only thing that bothered me. At times, it's a little too depressive for me. Other than that, stunning visuals, emotional and engaging story. Also,

Spoiler

I didn't know that WwY took place in the same universe as Your Name. So I was surprised by the cameos of Taki and Mitsuha, the main characters of YN. The crowd was surprised as well. They cheered and clapped when both of them showed up and interacted with the main characters of WwY.

I'd give Weathering With You a 50/50 shot of surpassing Avatar and entering the All-Time Top 10. We'll likely known once we see how it performs in the first week of September. Many summer releases either collapse or see sharp declines then, so we can get a better idea of where it may be headed.

Here is the updated Top 10 All-Time list from Corpse. I think passing Avatar is doable, but it will be a challenge. Right now, WWY is pacing behind Ponyo at the same point in time. Ponyo added around ¥5.5 billion after a much higher 5th weekend to finish with ¥15.5 billion. However, it did start dropping harder than usual after summer ended. I expect WWY to make up lost ground during this time.

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

Toy Story 4 is now aiming to reach ¥10 billion between day 55-60 at its current pace. I won't include it on the list until its target day is more certain. I don't want to dismiss its great performance, but it really did slow down after its record-setting opening weekend. A potential sub-8 multiplier for a mid-July release is quite mediocre. I know that the audience reception was mixed, so that clearly played a part, but it may not beat Toy Story 3 or Finding Nemo after all.

I guess that assumes Weathering With You has a more adult audience, but I think it's too much of a challenge.

WWY for sure has a more adult audience than Ponyo. I admittedly went to a fairly late session (21:30), but i’m pretty sure it was all 20s and up.
