So Weathering with You did cross ¥10B on its 34th day (Wed). According to the news, it has grossed ¥10.07B. It's the first Japanese movie that reach the milestone since Your Name.

That’s great news, just got back from the IMAX screening her in NZ and it was wonderful, not as good as Your Name in my opinion but still easily better than most animated films. Also the IMAX screening was sold out and other sessions I looked out across the country were selling well so I’d say this has a good chance to make around the same amount of money over here as Your Name if not more.

It's possible that Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire climbs back up near the Top 10, but it's difficult to predict. Pre-sales indicate it's viable for the Top 10 (Top 12 at least), but it's likely to be pre-sale heavy, so they could be a bit misleading. Let's wait and see.

Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire is receiving its 4D expansion this weekend, its 20th weekend in release. It already succeeded in becoming the most attended film in the long-running franchise, but fell just short of outgrossing last year's film. But this expansion will allow it to outgross last year's film and claim the highest-grossing title as well. And to those saying that's unfair and needs an asterisk, last year's film received a 4D expansion as well, and if you compare the two films before their 4D expansions, then this year's film would have come out on top anyway.

So, we have an incredibly close battle for the #1 spot this weekend. Just over 2,000 admissions separated Weathering With You and The Lion King (with The Lion King on top) at the usual locations (70-75% of the market), and while that would suggest that The Lion King defended its #1 spot due to its higher average ticket prices, Weathering With You plays much stronger in the unaccounted for rural prefectures and likely came out on top in admissions. It's really too close to call, but I'm going to give the slight edge to Weathering With You, especially since I'm more confident in it reclaiming the #1 spot over the weekend in ticket sales.

>Weathering With You, whether it reclaimed the #1 spot at the weekend box-office or not, took the initial post-holiday (Obon Festival) hit quite well, and achieved the best hold in the Top 20/25 films. It still appears on course to approach/reach the ¥15 billion ($140 million+) milestone and enter the All-Time Top 10 Films, but it will need even better holds over the next couple of weeks to do so.

>The Lion King, again whether it comes in at #1 or not, is still performing well, though this weekend's drop does indicate it's unlikely deliver exceptional legs from this point forward and suddenly become a ¥10 billion contender. It's likely going to finish between ¥7-8 billion ($65-75 million), and while that's ~35% less than Disney's other live-action remakes, it's still impressive and nothing to dismiss as disappointing. It really was unlikely to match the others due to featuring animals (I know, I know, but it's a real reason), and this result is very, very good.

>Ossan's Love: Love or Dead debuts in third place with a satisfactory opening weekend. It was a little frontloaded (Friday was oddly its biggest day), but I wouldn't think much of it yet since we're still firmly in the summer. It's aiming for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>One Piece Stampede enjoyed a good third weekend hold, and its third weekend is actually higher than both Film Gold and Film Strong World. And since its cumulative total is outpacing its predecessors (besides Film Z) by a comfortable margin due to Obon Festival last week, I'd say it's very close to locking up ¥5 billion ($45 million+) and will probably outgross Film Gold to become the second biggest film in the One Piece series, behind only Film Z.

>Toy Story 4 continues its good, but not great, performance after its record-setting opening weekend. It's still going to exceed the ¥10 billion ($93/94 million) milestone, just much later than it should be. And I'll wait another week to see if it has a final week of summer vacation boost, but it's doubtful to outgross Toy Story 3 and Finding Nemo now to become Pixar's biggest film in the market. This is only "disappointing" after its opening weekend. Before its opening weekend, a ¥10 billion total would have been exceptional.

However... this does continue the ongoing trend of Pixar sequels receiving mixed reviews and declining from their predecessors in the market. Besides Cars 2 (not a big franchise in Japan anyway), every Pixar sequel has declined.

>Rocketman had a very mediocre debut, which is kind of surprising to me since Japanese audiences generally support musicals/music-inspired films. Legs will probably be solid, but this opening doesn't really allow it to gross much even with good legs. A total of ¥1 billion ($10 million) is doable, but not guaranteed.

>Ni no Kuni: The Movie, based on the popular modern RPG series, basically bombed. If it does come in above ¥100 million for the weekend, that's "okay"... well, not really, it's still a poor debut. It'll probably have a bit of frontloaded as well due to its fanbase and absence of younger viewers once it reaches September, so ¥500 million ($5 million) could be as high as it goes.

>Aladdin will indeed enter the All Time Top 20 Films, but it'll be very short-lived since Weathering With You will overtake it pretty soon.

Split #1 films this weekend:

>The Lion King achieved its third-consecutive weekend atop the weekend box-office, though drops to second place in weekend admissions, selling a further 290,000. It experienced quite the spike to its average ticket price, likely linked to a cut in 2D showtimes. The film exceeded 3.2 million admissions after 17-days in release. Its projected total could still stay a bit, depending on how it behaves once summer vacation is over next week, but it's looking good for a total around ¥7.5 billion ($65 million+).

>Weathering With You wasn't able to climb back to the #1 spot in weekend revenue, but it did rise back atop the weekend box-office in admissions, selling an additional 305,000 admissions in its sixth-weekend of release. Makoto Shinkai's latest exceeded 8 million admissions after 38-days in release. It will overtake Aladdin in a couple of weeks to become the #1 film of 2019, and is targeting a total around ¥15 billion ($140 million+). How close to the mark, or how much above it, depends on how the post-summer vacation business affects it next week.

>Ossan's Love: Love or Dead settles for a respectable third place debut, selling 239,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 325 screens, and sold 389,533 admissions since opening on Friday. A pretty good start here, and it should be able to gross around ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>One Piece Stampede experienced the second biggest third weekend in the franchise, after only One Piece Film Z, and has exceeded 3.1 million admissions after 17-days in release. So far, it's displaying better holding power than I would have expected, and a total north of ¥5 billion ($45-50 million) is guaranteed now. It should even make a realistic run closer to ¥5.5 billion ($50 million+), which will make it the second highest grossing film in the series (again, behind Film Z).

>Toy Story 4 is still doing well, but well has become its Achilles heel, so to speak. Following its record-setting opening weekend, it just hasn't been able to deliver any remarkable holds, simply "good" ones, and will ultimately have to struggle a bit to reach the ¥10 billion milestone. It's also impossible now to outgross Toy Story 3 (¥10.8 billion) or Finding Nemo (¥11.0 billion), which was a very likely scenario when it opened. It has, however, sold more admissions than Toy Story 3, so that's very impressive. And a ¥10 billion total is never anything to dismiss, it's incredible, but there was a decent amount of money left on the table here.

>Rocketman couldn't get off the ground, posting a mediocre debut by selling just 96,000 admissions over the weekend across 321 screens, and sold 135,105 admissions since opening on Friday. Musical/music-inspired films generally perform well in Japan, but there have been a string of them disappointing ever since Bohemian Rhapsody's phenomenal run. The film is unlikely to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Ni no Kuni: The Movie hasn't had its weekend figure released yet, but its 3-day cumulative total above is its actual. It sold 110,640 admissions since opening on Friday. This is a very disappointing number, and I wouldn't expect much more than ¥500 million ($4-5 million) or so here.

>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire received its 4D expansion in its 20th weekend of release, but failed to come near the Top 10. However, with the many weeks of unreported numbers in limited release combined with its earnings this weekend in 4D, it exceeded ¥9.18 billion ($84 million) to become the highest grossing film in the long-running franchise (it became the most attended back in July). This also marks the seventh-consecutive year that a Detective Conan film has outgrossed its predecessor.

Not a bad start for Samurai Shifters, but I doubt it's good enough to beat either The Lion King or Weathering With You over the weekend frame. And seeing as how Weathering With You has been holding better than The Lion King throughout the week (and beat it on Friday), I'm pretty confident in it finally reclaiming the #1 spot after coming close (sometimes very close) since being dethroned in its fourth weekend.

So-so for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino films don't really do too well in Japan, so no surprise this one isn't going to buck that trend. That said, DiCaprio and Pitt are draws in Japan, and the market is still one that star power matters in, but I guess even they couldn't get too many interested here.

Also, One Piece Stampede had a great Friday, down only about 15% versus last Friday. Some limited freebies (rather rewards for repeat viewers) are being handed out this weekend, I believe, so it's benefiting from the promotion. Let's see if that carries over into the weekend.

A bit of a tricky weekend to predict, but it should be a strong one to close out the summer box-office season. Why is it tricky to predict though?

Firstly, it's the last weekend of summer vacation, so sometimes films targeting children/teens really benefit and deliver excellent holds (and even an occasional increase). And secondly, Sunday is a 1st of a month, meaning it's a nationwide discount ticket price day (40% off prices). This will mean Sunday ticket sales will be significantly stronger than usual, while the average ticket prices will be way down. However, since everything will be selling more ticket than they typically would, nationwide discount days still see gains in revenue most of the tie due to the increased business.

We're probably going to see a close race for #1 once again between Weathering With You and The Lion King. I'm favoring the former taking back the #1 spot after losing it in its fourth weekend of release, but we've seen audiences really take advantage of getting those discounted premium showing ticket prices (IMAX/3D) for the latter, so it's up in the air at this stage.

And I may have misspoke about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It didn't perform well on Friday, but its Saturday pre-sales are quite impressive. Unless they're misleading (maybe skewed due to a small, but dedicated, Tarantino base and interest in DiCaprio & Pitt), it stands a very good shot at making the Top 5 and possibly aiming for third place. We'll see -- so far, it's behaving unpredictably.

So, before anyone wonders why the drops (although great, mostly) above are "high" compared to the drop in admissions, it's because of Sunday. It was the 1st of a month, meaning ticket prices were discounted 40% nationwide. So while the admission drops are amazing, the revenue drops typically end up being 10-15% higher. And when the 1st of a month does fall on a weekend, it does help the drops overall due to the increased business. That said, actuals can differ a bit more due to how the ticket prices are affected.

Anyway,

>Weathering With You without a doubt retakes the #1 spot in its seventh weekend of release, marking its fourth non-consecutive weekend at #1. Its weekend admissions were also up 15/16% versus last weekend, but as I mentioned, the revenue percentage will be worse. But, since it enjoyed such a bump in admissions, it likely experienced a small weekend increase in revenue regardless. Very, very impressive result here, and what it needed to keep that ¥15 billion ($140 million) milestone on track.

The Radwimps soundtrack for the film reached #1 on the daily charts (#2 on the weekly), and has had two singles ("Grand Escape" and "Is There Still Anything That Love Can Do?") charting well. Both singles reached #1 on the digital sales chart. The soundtrack is still in Oricon's Weekly Top 10 and has sold 108,849 physical copies after six weeks. I'm not sure of the digital album sales, but they're probably impressive if the singles are any indication.

And Makoto Shinkai's novel adaptation of his film also debuted at #1 and has sold 401,824 copies after six weeks. It was #1 in its first three weeks of release, fell to #2 in its fourth week, returned to #1 in its fifth week, and was #2 in its sixth week.

So... the "Tenki no Ko" (Weathering With You) name is doing very, very well. Not many can claim to have a #1 film, #1 soundtrack, #1 single/singles, and #1 novel. Weathering With You had a #1 everything at the same point in time. 😉

>The Lion King slips to second place in its fourth weekend of release. It continues to perform well, and remains on track for a total around ¥7.5 billion (~$70 million).

>One Piece Stampede did what it needed to this weekend to guarantee a total above the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. I expect it'll enter a free fall very soon, but it's very likely to outgross One Piece Film Gold (¥5.18 billion) and become the second highest grossing film in the franchise.

>Samurai Shifters performed decently, and should certainly reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone (likely around ¥1.2/1.3 billion).

>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood continued to be pretty unpredictable over the weekend, and basically winded up slightly higher than it was expected to after all, despite the good pre-sales. Films that open on a weekend where the 1st of a month lands tend to be a little frontloaded, but even if that's the case here, Tarantino's latest should reach ¥1 billion ($10 million).

>Toy Story 4 held well and is guaranteed to exceed ¥10 billion ($93/94 million), though it still may take a couple of weeks since its weekday business is going to collapse now that summer vacation has concluded

>Weathering With You reclaims the #1 spot in its seventh weekend of release, marking its fourth non-consecutive weekend at #1. Its weekend admissions were up 14% compared to last weekend, selling a further 347,000 admissions, but since Sunday was a national discount day, it ended up dropping 1% in revenue. Its seven-week admissions rise to an incredibly impressive 8,751,178, allowing Makoto Shinkai's latest to surpass Aladdin to become the most-attended film of 2019. It'll overtake Aladdin in revenue next weekend to become the highest-grossing film of 2019, and is on course to reach at least ¥14 billion ($130 million) to become the 12th highest-grossing film of all-time, but that ¥15 billion milestone remains in play for now, so does cracking the all-time Top 10.

>The Lion King slips to second place in its fourth weekend of release, selling an additional 264,000 admissions. Its four-week admissions have climbed to 3,855,232. Disney's live-action remake of its classic remains on a steady path toward a total around ¥7.5 billion ($70 million). Again, this is noticeably less than most of Disney's other live-action remakes, but this will still end up a big success.

>One Piece Stampede did what it needed to this weekend to guarantee a total above the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. The 20th anniversary celebratory film sold a further 200,000 admissions over its fourth weekend of release, and has reached 3,583,493 admissions so far. I expect it'll enter a free fall very soon, but it's very likely to outgross One Piece Film Gold (¥5.18 billion) and become the second highest grossing film in the franchise.

>Samurai Shifters performed decently, selling 199,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 325 screens, and reached 275,617 admissions since opening on Friday. The film will have a bit of frontloading to it since it opened on a discount weekend, but a total above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone is locked up with this debut.

>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood came in a bit higher than I estimated, selling 170,000 admissions over the weekend on 320 screens, and reached 223,216 admissions since opening on Friday. Tarantino's latest was difficult to predict over the weekend, lots of ups and down, but it ultimately delivered a fair enough debut. Expect a total a bit above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Toy Story 4 ends its last summer weekend with a good hold that will guarantee it eventually reaches the ¥10 billion milestone, it'll just take two or three more weeks since its weekday business is going to collapse now. The fourth and final(?) entry in the series has sold 7,530,493 admissions after eight-weeks in release.

>God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Crimson Legend's weekend figure is an estimate, but its three-day total is an actual. Just barely considered a wide release, playing on 100 screens, the film sold 155,551 admissions since opening on Friday.
