I dunno, you really think Dragon Ball can make it? It would take quite a few more movies.

the last one made 123M dollars, and I seem rebooting the series in a "Super" style every few years so eventually it'll get there.

>Hit Me Anyone One More Time achieves its third consecutive weekend atop the box-office, going unchallenged for the #1 position, selling a further 185,000 admissions. Koki Mitani's latest is very likely to exceed the ¥3 billion (~$30 million) milestone, and could climb a high as ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million). This is a very impressive result for an early Fall release, and it should have a safe spot in the Yearly Top 20.

>Weathering With You rose to second place in its eleventh-weekend of release, as predicted, thanks to its 4DX expansion; and while the hold is certainly great, it is, perhaps, just slightly worse than expected going into the weekend. Makoto Shinkai's latest uber-blockbuster sold 85,000 admissions over its eleventh weekend, and has now sold an incredible 9,972,393 admissions after seventy-three days in release. It'll exceed 10 million admissions on Tuesday (probably <5,000 away after Monday), which will make it the eighteenth overall and tenth domestic film in history to ever achieve this accomplishment.

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War continues its surprisingly welcomed good performance, and has locked up an eventual ¥2 billion (~$20 million) total with another good hold.

>Ad Astra delivered a disappointing debut last weekend, coming in third place, but its second weekend is probably even more disappointing. It's uncommon for any film besides heavily frontloaded fanbase films to drop over 50% in their sophomore frame, so a 57% decline is very alarming here. A ¥1 billion (~$10 million) total was unlikely after its debut, but now that milestone has become impossible.

>Ninkyo Gakuen remains estimated. It ranked in ninth place in weekend admissions, and that's probably where it debuted in revenue as well. Sometimes in takes a day or two longer for limited/near-limited releases from independent distributors to report their numbers, so I'll update this post with its actual figures when/if they're released.

>The Lion King just keeps on slipping and will probably see a severe screen/theater cut next weekend. It will, at least, surpass Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald sometime this week (probably Friday) to become the #5 film of 2019, but it looks to finish around ¥6.65 billion (~$62.6 million), which will be just shy of allowing it to break into the All-Time Top 100 (¥6.71 billion is required).

>Toy Story 4 has fallen outside of the Top 20 now and will enter limited release as soon as next week. Its weekend number wasn't reported due to being too low, but its cumulative total is now ¥10.04 billion ($94.0 million) after twelve-weeks in release.

From Corpse:

Joker performed very well over the weekend, and easily achieved the biggest opening for a DC film. But more impressive than that (given DC films aren't very popular), is that it certainly appears to have opened above ¥500 million, maybe earning as much as ¥550 million since the R-15 rating will likely inflate the average ticket price.

A ¥3 billion ($30 million) total should be in play, meaning it could challenge 1989's Batman to become the highest-grossing DC film ever.

I'm not going to do a full analysis since this update is very late.

>Joker really surprised in its debut, delivering the biggest opening weekend ever for a DC film by a whopping 41%, besting that of Suicide Squad. The solo Joker outing sold an impressive 356,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 359 screens; and sold 498,971 admissions since opening on Friday. And while all that's a significant achievement, it's also very notable since it came in above ¥500 million, making it just the ninth overall comic book/superhero film (DC/Marvel) to open above that mark AND it achieved the biggest opening weekend for the month of October (by revenue). Very, very impressive all around.

Even if it as the poor/mediocre legs of most films of the genre, it'll reach at least ¥2.5 billion ($25 million), but the novelty/unique factor of the release should give it more standard legs, so I'd expect a total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+). And as long as it exceeds ¥3 billion, it'll surpass the 1989 Batman to become DC's highest grossing film ever in Japan.

>All the other openers mostly performed as expected -- not very well, so I'll briefly go over their admissions: High & Low: The Worst sold 121,462 admissions on 322 screens; Laws of the Universe sold 96,000 admissions on 324 screens; John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum sold 84,000 admissions on 256 screens.

>Weathering With You has reached 10,118,193 admissions after twelve-weeks in release, surpassing Avatar on the all-time admissions chart. But the most notable accomplishment for it this weekend was that it surpassed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Armageddon, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban all at once to become the 13th highest-grossing film of all time. It's slowing down now, but it'll climb one more spot when it surpasses The Last Samurai (¥13.7 billion) in the coming weeks.

The impact of hyper-typhoon on Japan box office from corpse.

It's going to affect the whole box-office, and in an extreme way. There's no reason to even post a Weekend Forecast this week.

(Super) Typhoon Hagibis is huge (unfortunately, its impact could be the biggest in 50 years...) and is going straight across central Japan (where 80%+ of ticket sales come from). Up to 40 inches of rain is expected over the next 24 hours. Thankfully, the country's preparation is on point, and a lot of the area will effectively be on lockdown Saturday. Railways, supermarkets, hotels, theme parks, and even theaters are shutting down/going on lockdown. You know it's serious when most of Tokyo will be closed after 1PM today. It's the first time since the terrible 2011 Tohoku Earthquake that so many facilities will be closed.

As a result, Saturday-to-Saturday pre-sales are down over 90% (95% in most cases) for nearly every film. Sunday will recover a bit, as long as the storm's aftermath isn't catastrophic, but I believe everything will be down ~70/80% across the board this weekend.

Well, hopefully people will be back in cinemas once this passes and some good holds come in. Regardless, most important is that everyone is safe and this passes with little damage.

I wonder how much Japan v Scotland affects the BO today. The last few matches have averaged 30m each, they say up to 40m could be watching today. Next weekend when they play South Africa in the Quarter Finals will be HUGE

NOTE: Japan suffered through a major typhoon over the weekend, which greatly impacted the weekend box-office.

NOTE 2: Monday was a national holiday, so the cumulative totals above are as of Monday, 10/14.

>Joker easily repeats atop the box-office, and it has already outgrossed every modern DC film after two weeks (plus Monday) in release, and is the third highest-grossing DC film ever, behind just Batman and Superman II. And it's a lock to outgross both of them now, snapping the incredibly long 30-year streak of the 1989 Batman. It might be a little early to predict this, but a ¥4 billion ($35-40 million) total is looking quite likely.

>Way to Find the Best Life and Her Blue Sky couldn't have opened under worse conditions really, so it's not fair to analyze their debuts, really. Neither appear particularly strong, not a surprise given the time of year, but let's wait and see how they perform over the next week or two before writing them off as disappointments.

>Weathering With You has reached 10.22 million admissions after thirteen weeks in release, and is now less than ¥100 million away from surpassing The Last Samurai to become the 12th highest-grossing film of all-time.

And finally, given how much of an impact the typhoon had on the box-office, look for next weekend to see strong holds. I'd even expect some potential increases, but a lot of the lost weekend business was made up on Monday due to the holiday, so that should counter any crazy holds (single-digit) or possible increases.
