"Anna and the Snow Queen 2" has surpassed 10.34 million admissions and 13.211 million yen in revenues as of 2/16. Theatrical screening was announced to end on 3/12.

What? Are you sure? March 12 is too early! Frozen 2 is still in the top 10 and is still having a good weekly drop, I was expecting a screening end at the end of April...

I think this is from someone in Japan I think based on the post. I was just quoting it. It could be that Disney is releasing F2 on Home Video/Streaming and so the screening is stopped. i think something like this happened for the 1st movie as well if I am not wrong.

I guess Disney is releasing Onward on March 12. Endgame stopped its run when FFH released.

>Parasite rises to the top of the box-office in its sixth-weekend of release, experiencing a huge weekend increase following its incredible Oscar wins and an expansion as a result. The Best Picture winner sold 178,000 admissions over the weekend frame across its new screen count of 277, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 1.78 million. Expect another strong week at the box-office, with the possibility of another weekly increase in its seventh week of release. We'll have to wait a few more weeks to see when it peaks and begins to decline before giving an accurate total projection, but a finish around ¥4 billion ($35-40 million) is likely, but it could go higher.

>1917 had to settle for a second place debut, selling 124,000 admissions over the weekend across 353 screens; it sold 178,102 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is a so-so debut, one that was likely deflated by losing out on any major Oscar wins last Sunday. It'll have good weekday business due to attracting an older audience, but I also don't believe legs will be anything amazing since Parasite has really overshadowed it. It'll be aiming for a total around the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Howling Village held spectacularly well in its sophomore frame. Its opening weekend was impressive and certainly welcomed by distributor Toei, but this second weekend is more impressive and should allow the film to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone now.

>Frozen II held strong in its thirteenth-weekend of release, and has now become the seventeenth-highest grossing film of all-time, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody. Expect a total between ¥13.3-13.4 billion ($122/123 million). I know that its performance is being written off as disappointing, even "embarrassing", and I will agree that it's underwhelming, but it's far from an embarrassing performance. A 40% drop-off (giving it ¥15/16 billion) was very expected as a follow-up to a phenomenon, which have always dropped off by that much, so a 47/48% decline, while higher than expected, isn't "sad" and can certainly be attributed to its poor November release date, 6-weeks out from any holiday in the market.

>Cats experienced another rough drop this weekend, and I don't believe Japan will lay claim as its biggest overseas market (currently the U.K.) now. Still, given how poorly received and how awful its numbers were everywhere else, a total a bit above ¥1.3 billion ($12 million) is respectable in that regard. I don't think another attempt at a Cats adaptation will be in the works for quite some time, but hopefully Hollywood (or whoever) does it differently next time--there's easy money to be made from it in the market.

>My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, now outside of the Top 15 in its ninth-weekend of release, surpassed the total of its predecessor over the weekend and has sold 1.31 million admissions.

Tbh I was expecting 150M for frozen 2 in japan, but I feel ok with 120M+ For me its not sad. I understand that it had almost none holidays (before christmas and new year) not only in japan, but in so many places. This just shows the strenght of the brand worldwide. And to be fair, It had the advantage of an underperforming Star war sequel, a-not-so-huge performance of Jumanji (especially overseas) and Cats/Spies in desguise which both flopped. So it could have been worse if any of those movies overperformed and overshodowed Frozen.

What a pity! Japan is famous for his long runs, biggest films usually stay in theaters for over 5 months. The latest example is "Weathering with you" which ended his run just one month ago.

>Parasite will repeat atop the box-office for a second-consecutive weekend, its seventh weekend in release. It increased nearly 200% last weekend, so a 30% decline or so is perfectly reasonable. It will become the highest-grossing South Korean film in the market after this weekend as well, surpassing 2005's A Moment to Remember.

>Stolen Identity 2 looks to come in below its predecessor, but the forecast would still a decent enough start for a sequel to a mediocre performing original.

>Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna is the conclusion film to the six-part Digimon Adventure tri film saga that was released over the past five years, and fittingly given its finale factor, looks to debut higher than any of the six Adventure tri films--but not by much. Digimon Adventure tri: Part 1 - Reunion currently has the biggest opening with ¥43.6 million ($356,000), but it failed to make the Top 10 (debuting in 11th), so Last Evolution Kizuna should become the first to actually make the Top 10.

Nothing too different from the Weekend Forecast, great hold for Parasite after its 197% increase last weekend though, so I'm not going to post an analysis until tomorrow. However, I did forgot to include Charlie's Angels in the forecast, so I'll talk about it for a moment. I honestly didn't see it when looking at Friday's results and Saturday's pre-sales.

What an epic bomb! It's definitely among the biggest bombs of all-time.

The early 2000s Charlie's Angels films were actually decent hits in Japan, and Sony certainly hoped to bank on some of that success with a significantly wide release (it's the third widest film in release this weekend) for this new film, but... its opening weekend came in 91% below Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. 91%. It only sold 6.8% of its available tickets over the weekend. Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna is playing at 84% fewer locations with 82% fewer showtimes and likely beat it over the weekend. :|

Sunday was the birthday of the new Emperor (the birthday of the sitting Emperor is a national holiday), so Monday was also a holiday as a result since Emperor's Day fell on a Sunday. In Japan, when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is also a holiday.

So, no Weekend Actuals until tomorrow. However, I'll post Monday's estimates later tonight since it was a pretty big day.

NOTE: Cumulative Totals are as of Monday, February 24th.

>Parasite reigns atop the weekend box-office in its seventh week of its release, earning its second consecutive weekend at #1. This is actually its biggest drop to date, however, it's still very good and it's coming off of a prior weekend increase of 197%. Not to mention its seventh weekend is its second biggest weekend. It sold a further 204,000 admissions over the weekend frame, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 2.42 million. The breakout Korean smash also became the highest grossing South Korean film in Japan, surpassing 2005's A Moment to Remember.

A total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million+) is locked up now, so the new goal has become a likely total between ¥4.5-5.0 billion ($40-45 million).

>Stolen Identity 2 settled for second place, selling 143,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 323 screens; it sold 268,795 admissions over its first four-days in release (including Monday). This debut is 16% below the opening weekend of its predecessor, which is a fair decline, but it's also a stronger result than where it seemed headed (30% drop-off) going into the weekend. Expect a total around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Howling Village held well once again, selling an additional 83,000 admissions in its third weekend of release, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 675,009. The numbers here aren't much to talk about on their own, but they're good for a Toei live-action release playing on just over 200 screens, especially this time of year. It's going to exceed the ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) milestone pretty easily, and probably finish around ¥1.1/1.2 billion ($10/11 million).

>Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna earned the biggest opening weekend for a modern Digimon film, besting the debuts of all six Digimon Adventure tri films. The weekend figure itself is an updated estimate, but its four-day total is an actual, where it sold 78,437 admissions on only 48 screens--a pretty impressive result.

>Charlie's Angels was a massive bomb for Sony. Sony gave it a traditional wide release, and it was the third widest release this weekend, but as you can see, it was all for naught and certainly cost them a lot of money. It only sold 76,628 admissions over its first four days of release across 306 screens. Epic flop.

>Bombshell and Midsommer were both small release from independent distributors and performed about as well as expected. Midsommer sold 77,125 admissions over its first four days in release on 106 screens, while Bombshell sold 75,278 on 200 screens.

Theaters still open in japan? Any plans/annoucement for closing theaters?

No,but you have to wonder if people will just voluntary decide to avoid crowds whenever possible, and that could badly hurt box office in general.

And I got a sick feeling we will be discussing this for just about every country before too long..including the US.

So far, all theater are still open with no announcements for imminent closure. However, some big films like Doraemon have pushed back their release dates to be safe. All schools being closed is a precautionary measure as those were responsible for the majority of recent cases.
