I won't have time to post a Weekend Forecast tonight, however, I'll be posting hourly updates for the latest Detective Conan film (in comparison with last year's three ¥1 billion+ debuts) because it's going to have a mammoth opening weekend, easily the biggest of the year so far (possibly overall by the end of the year) and possibly over ¥1 billion. First time since 2014.

It has sold nearly 30% of its available tickets for the day in advance.

First time since 2014 would require a 1 million debut in admissions, not a 1 billion debut in yen. The last movie to do it was Yôkai Watch in december 2014. ;)

Imagine if BATB had opened this weekend. The Japanese BO would have exploded. :D

Before BATB's arrival,  Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter has a massive opening.

per Corpse

Absolutely huge for the latest Detective Conan film, quite easily beating all the other uber-tier openings of the past 3 years above.

No film has opened above 1 million admissions since 2014, but Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter is looking at possibly 1.1 million admissions and a gross over ¥1.4 billion (~$13 million) this weekend, which might beat Howl's Moving Castle to deliver the second biggest opening weekend for a domestic film of all-time.

Why has Detective Conan suddenly become so massive? Before that, each new entry either slightly increased from the previous installment or stagnated  Last year's entry had the justification of coinciding with the 20th anniversary, but not this one. This is absolutely bonkers! With ¥1.4b opening, its probably going to tp the original Yokai Watch to become the highest grossing among these local annual franchises ever (Pokémon, Yokai Watch, Dorarmon- well, excluding Stand by Me, which was its own thing- etc).

After stagnating during the second half of last decade, the Japanese box office seems to be really on fire in this one (increasing year on year in both gross and admissions for 5+ consecutive years). At some point, it probably has to stop? Since statistically and demographically, Japan's decreasing Youth (and total) population can't sustain these incredible numbers.
