>IT climbs to the #1 position after delivering an amazing third weekend hold, following an even more impressive second weekend increase last week. So far, both its second and third weekends have been greater than its opening weekend. It has already exceeded a multiplier of 6 (6.3/6.4) after just three weeks as well, and nothing should slow it down anytime soon -- at least not until Star Wars/Yo-Kai Watch slash holdover screens/theaters again for a third-consecutive year.

I'm going to project it'll at least double its current three week total, exceeding ¥2 billion (~$20 million), and could reach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>High & Low 3: Final Mission actually managed a decent enough second weekend hold, and despite debuting 14% below its predecessor, it should finish within 10% of its total.

>Godzilla: Planet of Monsters disappoints with a third place debut (maybe fourth), and likely missed the ¥100 million mark over the weekend frame unless its avg. ticket price ends up being notably higher than normal. As I've said earlier, Toho didn't handle the film, the first in a trilogy of animated films in their Godzilla franchise, as a major release (it was barely more than a wide release) so I'm unsure how to read the performance so far.

>Thor: Ragnarok held fine in its third weekend, and is on the cusp of exceeding the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone now. Not only is the milestone considered the commercial success mark in the market, but it's also the mark that most Marvel/DC films strive for with only 59% of them (and just 45% when excluding Spider-Man films) making it.

>The Stand-In Thief likely missed ¥100 million as well in its debut, but the result is still solid for distributor Showgate so I'd consider it a respectable opening.

From corpse:

With the success of IT, I'm currently compiling a list of highest-grossing horror films. I've never had to do this before, since the genre is rarely successful at the box office, so it's proving pretty difficult. Also, the horror genre itself is very broad with action, suspense, thriller, psychological, monster, supernatural, and slasher films possibly falling into the horror category as well.

So, I want some help. I'm going to post my list soon, which I've heavily restricted to what I'd consider a horror film, which is going to leave off a significant number of potential entries. I want anyone reading this to make their own lists of "horror" films that like to add for consideration to be placed on the list. Thanks.

Highest-Grossing Horror Films of All-Time (1980-)

¥7.68 billion ($73.1 million) - The Sixth Sense (1999)
¥3.30 billion ($26.6 million) - Ringu 2 (1999)
¥2.50 billion ($22.9 million) - School Ghost Stories 2 (1996)
¥2.34 billion ($29.4 million) - Lesson of the Evil (2012)
¥2.32 billion ($14.5 million) - School Ghost Stories (1995)
¥1.90 billion ($17.9 million) - Sleepy Hollow (2000)
¥1.78 billion ($14.7 million) - School Ghost Stories 3 (1997)
¥1.75 billion ($14.2 million) - The Ring (2002)
¥1.70 billion ($15.5 million) - The Village (2004)
¥1.70 billion ($6.9 million) - Lifeforce (1985)
¥1.65 billion ($10.2 million) - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1995)
¥1.60 billion ($12.9 million) - The Others (2002)
¥1.55 billion ($12.5 million) - Ringu (1998)
¥1.50 billion ($13.7 million) - One Missed Call (2003)
¥1.35 billion ($17.3 million) - Sadako 3D (2012)
¥1.22 billion ($10.5 million) - As the Gods Will (2014)
¥1.10 billion ($9.5 million) - Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2003)
¥1.02 billion ($10.8 million) - The Complex (2013)
¥1.01 billion ($8.7 million) - One Missed Call 2 (2005)
¥1.00 billion ($9.5 million) - Sadako vs. Kayako (2016)

IT, at the very least, will finish at #6 on this list, and could go as high as #3.

But again, feel free to suggest other films for consideration for this list. There are some biggies missing that I, personally, never really considered horror films such as Gremlins and Ghostbusters.

Also, if anyone has any data on The Exorcist, please share. It hasn't been included in any all-time lists in Japanese articles/sources, but its foreign total ($208 million) suggests it had to earn a significant sum from Japan at the time.

>IT climbs to the #1 position in its third weekend of release, delivering an amazing third weekend hold, following an even more impressive second weekend increase from last week. After three weeks, the horror flick has sold over 870,000 admissions.

So far, both its second and third weekends have been greater than its opening weekend. It has already exceeded a multiplier of 6 (6.18) as well, and nothing should slow it down anytime soon -- at least not until Star Wars/Yo-Kai Watch slash holdover screens/theaters again for a third-consecutive year. I'm going to project it'll at least double its current three week total, exceeding ¥2 billion (~$20 million), and could reach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>High & Low 3: Final Mission actually managed a decent second weekend hold, and despite debuting 14% below its predecessor, it should finish within 10% of its total. The third film in the High & Low film project has exceeded 500,000 admissions.

>Godzilla: Planet of Monsters disappoints with a third place debut, although it did managed to open above ¥100 million thanks to a rather high avg. ticket price. Toho's first in a planned trilogy of animated films in its Godzilla franchise, and 30th overall release, sold 71,205 admissions across 158 screens over the weekend frame (and 102,085 since opening on Friday).

>Thor: Ragnarok falls to fourth place in its third weekend, and is on the cusp of exceeding the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone now. Not only is the milestone considered the commercial success mark in the market, but it's also the mark that most Marvel/DC films strive for with only 59% of them (and just 45% when excluding Spider-Man films) making it.

>The Stand-In Thief comes in fourth place over the weekend, selling 66,970 admissions over the weekend on 225 screens. The debut is certainly mediocre, but it does come in rather well in comparison to most other live-action Showgate releases, so I'm sure they're fairly satisfied.

>Logan Lucky manages an eighth place debut in an incredibly close battle -- less than $3,000 separated the bottom three Top 10 films -- at the bottom of the Top 10. The film sold 46,161 admissions over the weekend on 304 screens. This is obviously a poor debut, but there were no expectations here, so... shrug*

>And a special mention: Kubo and the Two-Strings finally debuted in Japan, but only managed to earn ¥10,829,900 ($97,000) on 8,128 admissions across 48 screens.

Looks like the holiday ended up hurting Godzilla Monster Planet more than good. It had a pretty decent Thursday (the holiday) but then dropped way harder on Friday compared to other films.

Is there a reason for that? Was it because it opened last Friday (the 17th) and that day plays as a "preview" day? Just was shocked to see it dropped 70% compared to last Friday. Hoping for a rebound today(Saturday), as I'm hoping for each film in this trilogy to do 5m+
