DM3 has grossed approx 20M in France after 11.4M opening weekend, which is very bad. So Valerian could end up doing only 15M total in France. MAX 20M. That's a flop, right? DM3 is currently at $26m in 17 days in France after a $9.9m opening weekend. Minions was at $27m in 17 days in France after a $11.4m opening weekend. It ended up grossing $44m in France in 2015. That's exactly what Valerian seems to be able to do, maybe even more. But that's not good enough....Lucy did 42 million in France and had a budget of 40 million. It did very well EVERYWHERE. DM3, as you say will do close to 35M. It has a 80 million budget and has done very well everywhere. But Valerian? It has to make up for its epic bombage in North America by grossing big numbers everywhere including France because it has a 200+ million budget. Bigger movie in 2015 made $ 43m, excluding SW7. No reason to expect an anomaly like $200m for Valerian in France. I think that Valerian should be doing at least Star Wars 7 numbers. It's a bit shameful to see French people paying more attention to a saga that plagiarized one of their product than their own product. 3
Bastien
It was unrealistic to think that Valerian could make an incredible score as over $ 50m. The movie is closer to a Star Trek than a Star Wars and when you see the Trek scores in France ... ($6m for Beyond).
Bastien
First estimate of the OD : DESPICABLE ME 3 (BIGGEST OF 2017) : 455 000 VALERIAN : 360 000 FAST & FURIOUS 8 : 312 000 VALERIAN : 360 000 LUCY : 351 000 ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLE : 316 000 THE FIFTH ELEMENT : 303 000

It's absolutely normal in France. Previews started at 7PM so it's normal they are important. The movie has a shot to do 5mil admissions in France. Maybe $40m. It's great. The problem is definitely not the French boxoffice.

Basically the top in $ for space operas in French boxoffice is : 1) Avatar : 176m$ 2) SW7 : 88m$ 3) The Fifth Element : ~~around 60m$ SW3 : 57m$ Rogue One : 40m$ SW2 : 30.6m$ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 : 25m$ Guardians of the Galaxy : 20m$ Prometheus : 16m$ John Carter : 8.9m$ Star Trek ID : 8m$ Star Trek : 6.9m$ Star Trek Beyond : 5.8m$ Jupiter Ascending : 5.5m$ Chronicles of Riddick : 5.2m$ With the current exchange rate that is very unfavorable, we could not expect better! 1
marveldcfox
Look at Avatar. Twice of TFA. Jesus Christ. That was truly a worldwide phenomenon.

Avatar did 100% better than TFA in France in dollars: but It only did 40% better in admissions (14.75mil vs 10.51mil), I think it shows well the decrease of the exchange rate.
