All movies were boosted a little admissions-wise today as the last Wednesday of the month is culture day in Korea where movie tickets get discounted for a certain period of time. This is why most holdovers held well despite Northern limit line opening today. Expect slight~average drops across the board tomorrow.

Very good for Northern Limit Line.

I have to say, having seen the main trailer for Assassination, it's a little underwhelming. Hoping the actual film is a lot better...

Wouldn't worry about it, have heard good things! Though I am more excited for VETERAN.

Very good for Northern Limit Line.

Was bound to get off to a good start but I really hope WOM sinks it (sorry), even though the local industry needs a hit.

Is Northern Limit Line the title of the Yeongdongpyo Island Attack film (spelling there is probably atrocious to the point of farce).

If so, the trailers at least for that are absolutely ridiculous.

Korean title for it is 연평해전 (Yeonpyeonghaejun) and this is the poster

And yeah, the trailers are pretty awful. They were going for a quasi-documentary feel I think to add a base of realism but it doesn't really work. Still, it has an (early) audience rating of 9.42/10.0 on Naver so perhaps the film itself is a crowd pleaser.

Btw, congrats on becoming a moderator!  :D

Thanks :)

It may be a good film, but trailers make it look like the event was some sort of Pearl Harbour with days of bombing and hundreds dying in war and fire.

It felt like the filmmakers were trying to turn the event into something much much bigger than it really was which is kind of insulting to the people that were caught up in that bombing that a filmmaker deemed the true story to not be 'exciting' enough for cinema and it needs to be sexed up into some sort of war film.

Of course the film may not be like that at all, but that was the feeling I got from the trailer.

While it wasn't pearl harbor, it was a sneaky, unprovoked attack from North Korea that killed the lives of innocent soldiers during a time of national celebration (2002 world cup) which is why a lot of people have bad memories of the time and I guess movie-makers want to market that which can sometimes lead to exaggeration. I'm not saying that is the case for Northern Limit Line because I haven't seen it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some artistic liberties taken to make the film more tragic/heart-wrenching

Just some background information on the film Northern Limit Line for those of you who are unfamiliar with Korean history. (Source is Wikipedia)

Background

The Northern Limit Line is considered by South Korea as the sea boundary between itself and North Korea, while North Korea disagrees and states that the boundary is farther south. North Korean fishing vessels often wander into the area and are frequently chased away by South Korean patrol vessels. Occasionally a North Korean patrol tries to enforce its southern claim by traversing the limit line. In 2002 one such incursion turned into a naval battle along the limit line.

350px-Map_of_Korean_maritime_border.svg.

The disputed maritime border between North and South Korea in the West Sea:
     A: United Nations-created Northern Limit Line, 1953
     B: North Korea-declared "Inter-Korean MDL", 1999

The locations of specific islands are reflected in the configuration of each maritime boundary, including

1–Yeonpyeong Island

2–Baengnyeong Island

3–Daecheong Island

Engagement

On June 29 2002, a North Korean patrol boat crossed the northern limit line and was warned to turn back. Shortly afterward a second patrol craft crossed the line and it too was warned to retreat back across the line. The North Korean boats began threatening and harassing the South Korean vessels following them.

After traveling three miles south past the limit line, the North Korean vessels attacked the two South Korean patrol boats that had been monitoring them. At 10:25 The vessel that had crossed the line first opened fire with its 85mm gun and scored a direct hit on the wheelhouse of one of the South Korean craft causing several casualties.

The two squadrons then began a general engagement with the South Koreans using their 40 and 30 mm guns against the North Korean RPGs, 85mm, and 35mm guns. After about ten minutes two more patrol boats and two corvettes reinforced the South Korean vessels and severely damaged one of the North Korean craft. Now heavily outnumbered and taking casualties the North Korean vessels were forced to retreat back across the Limit Line at 10:59.

Aftermath

Both the North Korean and South Korean flotillas took casualties from the action. Thirteen North Koreans were killed and twenty five wounded. The South Koreans suffered 4 casualties including Lt. Cmdr. Yoon Young-ha and three chief petty officers, Jo Cheon-hyung, Seo Hoo-won and Hwang Do-hyun. Nineteen others were injured, and one of them, Petty Officer Second Class Park Dong-hyuk, died 22 days later. One sailor, Chief Petty Officer Han Sang-guk, went missing during the skirmish, and he was later found dead. This totaled 6 deaths afterwards. The damaged South Korean craft later sank while under tow, while the damaged North Korean vessel was able to limp its way back to port. Both sides laid blame on each other and South Korea demanded an apology from North Korea.

According to a North Korean defector's statement in 2012, the North Korean patrol boat crewmembers involved in the battle suffered extensive splinter injuries from the South Korean "Devastator" shells. The injured North Koreans were reportedly quarantined in a hospital in Pyongyang to hide the extent of the casualties suffered in the battle.

Good to hear, any word yet on the quality of Veteran? I really like the cast so I'll see regardless but it would be nice if the film is great too!

Rsyu,where is Kwon Sang Woo?

He's participating in a film called 탐정 (English title: Detective) which is still in production. It's a comedy crime mystery thriller film set to be released later this year. No set release date yet.

Jurassic World beat 4 million admissions today, the 18th day of it's release. It's currently the 3rd biggest film of the year behind The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Kingsman.

congratulations for JW
