Besson wanted to make it. It's not an unreasonable bet, given the longevity of the source material and the general sellability for stuff like this worldwide.

It s also a question of pride and ambition.

I heard his wife/co producer talking about it : " let s do a movie from France that can rival with the American ones" and the price for that is around 200M and that s how it was sold to foreign markets/distributors.

The French blockbuster that wants to play with Mickey Mouse.

With a budget of $209 million, any film Luc Besson has done would've been a flop

Not is last one, Lucy made 463 million, that would have been a nice success with a 209 million gross budget (after those 30 to 40m tax credit come to help)

5th element made 401 million adjusted (for US inflation, not ticket) too.

So why are so many people certain this will flop?

Is there some early tracking I don't know about?

Everyone is all about the existing franchises and stuff that the general audience is predisposed to know about and shit. So of course something that's based off a comic that has basically no presence in the US is doomed from the getgo.

They've got some pretty unappealing leads for that kind of budget.

Right? I have no problem with Cara, but Dane.....

Is Liam Hemsworth busy or what? It's not like we need some top level Oscar-worthy performance for this anyway.

That aside, if there's one film that I'll defend with my life, it will be this.
