Fullbuster
That lousy TASM can hit $40M in Japan why not MoS? Because Spiderman is the coolest SH ever
Olive
Any interesting, promising local movies? I'm not familiar with Japanese movies other than Ghibli movies.
Bob Violence
There's a long history of companies revamping Spider-Man for the Japanese market. There was a manga adaptation all the way back in 1970 (which Marvel eventually killed because it got too dark and weird), and the late '70s brought this incredible...thing. I don't know how popular these actually were, but they probably helped ingrain the character in the minds of the Japanese public.
Olive
MAN OF STEEL: $367M Overseas Total / $657.3M Global Total. #ManOfSteel
Olive
Man of Steel opened to a strong $3.5 million debut in Japan, but it wasn't enough to bring down the blockbuster run of Miyazaki's The Wind Also Rises from first place. The Wind Also Rises has been a top grosser in Japan, collecting an $82.4 million cume since its July 20 premiere. The Wind Also Rises has already overshadowed the release of Star Trek Into Darkness in the market, which lost the head-to-head battle against the anime release last weekend. Man of Steel is the latest film to fall against The Wind Also Rises, despite a release that spanned across 612 screens. Man of Steel has grossed a total of $367 million overseas and has earned a cume of $657.3 million worldwide.

Dilusha Bandara
15M 380M OS final total. 670 WW is pretty disappointing. But it deserves.

messipotamia
ASM will be the highest grossing reboot for a very long time and spidy has proven once again that he's Amazing but MOS has done just fine, being the 2nd highest grossing reboot WW and the highest grossing reboot domestically

peludo
TASM is well ahead of MOS and remains the highest-grossing reboot in history! Well, you can see in other way. In 2007 there was 500 million difference between Spider-man (890 million of SM3) and Superman (391 of SR). Today the difference is under 100.

TASM got a lot of (unfair) hatred, MOS got a lot of hype and excitment. TASM was in competition with TDKR and Ice Age 4, MOS' competition was pretty weak. And despite that TASM perfomed better.

Domestically: 2nd weekend of MOS: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2013&wknd=25&p=.htm I do not remember any movie against a 82 and a 66 openers on its 2nd weekend. 3rd weekend of MOS: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=&yr=2013&wknd=26&p=.htm I do not remember any movie being 5th with a 20 million weekend, not even at Christmas. 4th weekend of MOS: Despicable me 2 In my opinion, MOS has had a very strong competition. And relative to OS, MOS came from a 191 million precedent. Maybe we should take into account that Superman is not so beloved in foreign markets as Spider-man. TASM came from a 550 grosser. Nah most of that hatred was deserved cause it sucked, and there was a lot of MOS hatred once it actually opened. And if you look at overall box office, MOS had more competition, June was the biggest ever by more than 150m, and July 2013 was the second biggest ever (above July 2012)
