Their major audience now are old people and females, which trend to dislike superhero movies and (sci-fi) action flicks that Hollywood tentpoles have become. Also part of reason why Hollywood productions always tank in Japan in recent two years compared with years ago.

It'll be interesting to see how Spidey will fare next year. I know that Spidey is popular in Japan and all, but I think with the current state of most Hollywood movies over there, especially superheroes movies, TASM2 will decrease from the first, probably to around IM3's number.

Is this still opening in Japan?

 

^^ You are right that Hollywood 

has an outdated view of East Asia.

The superhero genre is for younger

demographics but the same audience

doesn't see samurais as heroes/anti-heroes

or even villains, nor do they have affinity for

such old world ethics.

 

The reason for the decline in US movies in Japan.

Young students who are previously known for being

passive are now brave enough to take it to the street

and challenge the establishment.

 

The last great year for Hollywood in Japan is 2011

when there are POTTER finale, Mi4: Dubai, Pirates 4,

and TF3 did very good business ($50M+) 

 

They have their own costumed superheroes:
