Community Manager Water Bottle Posted August 27, 2013 Community Manager Share Posted August 27, 2013 Not really. Smurfs 2 is obviously more profitable because it has half budget of STiD. So? That only means Smurfs 2 had to perform half of what STiD in order to make a profit. The benchmark was significantly lower for success so that Star Trek Into Darkness managed to make more than it's production budget is actually more of an achievement for Star Trek when compared to Smurfs 2.
tilko
Based on the fact that it cost $105 million to make and has only grossed $27.1 million to date, many will naturally assume that The Smurfs 2 is a flop. Since studios rarely ever make sequels to movies that flop, many will also naturally assume that The Smurfs 3 won’t be forthcoming. Strangely, both of these assumptions are dead wrong. Thanks to product placement and marketing tie-ins, The Smurfs 2 was already profitable before it even hit theatres.

Movies by themselves are rarely "profitable" (largely because studios will do everything in their power to make it so because they hate making royalty payments).
