Fanboy
I went on BOM and I was so excited about Looper's opening in China.
The Toymaker
There's no way the 10-day total for Looper reaches $25m in China. It made less than $5m in its first 3 days!!!
dezorz
$8.5M OS weekend according to Rentrak. http://www.rentrak.c..._10_charts.html this number looks most probable excluding china boffo, of course. (4M from russia, 3,5M from UK, 2,5M from Australia) we must wait until official chinese numbers are out, which would be in a week time, wouldnt it? anyway, this is perfect example how box office press works, they get one number from a distributor and all of them simple share this number. good or wrong, who cares. well, rentrak cares, as we see, but studios and press as well, they all want surprises and big numbers. i am really curious if it is an error (mistaken rmbs for dollars) or it is on purpose 10 days estimate gross being given as current weekend gross. dezorz
"While we don’t have the final box office tally’s because of the Chinese national holiday, it looks as if we are No. 1 in that market and at least on par if not exceeding the U.S. box office," said Endgame chief executive Jim Stern. "A big congratulations to my partner Dan Mintz and his team at DMG are in order."

The Toymaker
It's only going to look embarrassing on them when everybody finds out, so I think it was a legitimate mistake.

A Marvel Fanboy
That's how press works. DHD reported first. And Nikki got source from one distributor. Other sites were just copying or also got source from distributors. Edited October 1, 2012 by firedeep
dezorz
Rentrak doesn't care either.why is that?
dezorz
That's how press works. DHD reported first. And Nikki got source from one distributor. Other sites were just copying or also got source from distributors.i think they didnt report false information on purpose. somewhere in the cchain a person made a mistake. someone who doesnt know what real boffo numbers in china are. otherwise he/she would realise 24M for a weekend is an enormous number in a scale of TF3 or avatar. other executives without having a single tought about it came with looper is bigger in china than in US. the message spread out. i think then they realised what they did but, as we know, a fart once release is hard to stop, they didnt try to put thing right. why, now they have a free advertasing news. they will come up with an excuse later. rentrak (now both with previous nielsen edi) is the only boffo clearing house which gets its data directly from theaters databases. if the trade press was getting their data from rentrak they could not publish information about looper being stronger in china. my guess is, trade papers are subscribed to rentrak, but studios datas have priority for them. a line ´studios sources say ... ´ sopund much more insider-like than ´rentrak reports ....´
The Toymaker
why is that? For them to make a currency mistake obviously tells us that their priorities are more in the reporting of a record opening than in the accuracy of actual grosses. lab276
For them to make a currency mistake obviously tells us that their priorities are more in the reporting of a record opening than in the accuracy of actual grosses. Why would Rentrak care about records? dezorz
For them to make a currency mistake obviously tells us that their priorities are more in the reporting of a record opening than in the accuracy of actual grosses.it seems you have got something wrong. rentrak reported looper´s international gross at 8.5M not at 30M+ as other box office news we keep receiving. this is my point why they actually care.rentrak is not a magazine, newspaper or a blog. rentrak is a clearinghouse and a tracking company. what they do is collecting data (box office information, home entertainment revenue ....) from theaters, vendors, .... but not from distributors or studios. they do not care about any particular record at all. they make enough money just by tracking data. (100M annual revenue) . couple of years ago they bought nielsen edi and now they are the sole tracking company for box office data.it is devastating what happened to box office. people want all possible data at once and free, of course. this was not the case before. can you imagine there was no weekend box office stats on monday morning before 1996? (variety started to provide boffo data on monday morning) before 1998 there were no Friday data available on saturday (box office mojo started this) we got used to get fast boffo information for free now. but we all demand quality of data as well. it is not possible. this is why rentrak is slower and reports less. 8,5M in contrary with 14M from box office mojo, which is the only site which mention doubts about looper chinese gross.it was exhibition relations later followed by box office mojo which report box office numbers from studios. they have information sooner but less reliable. now it seems that trade magazines, although they have a rentrak subscription, they all follow what studios say. in a competitive world they need fast data, not reliable one, yesterday news is not attractive one, right? This is why we like deadline, deadline is superfast, but super wrong very often. People claim they want exact information but what they really want is superfast speed.
Rudolf
All the information services live by carrying ads. There is room for fast error-prone and slow accurate services in the market.
