Since they are (I think) creations of Gru's, maybe one could come out with heightened intelligence and the ability to speak. Then he recruits a splinter faction of regular minions and they break away from the lair to have their own adventure. Then at the end, you have a cameo from Steve Carell (a la Prof X at the end of Origins: Wolverine) to bring them home.
