Star Wars is more popular domestic than overseas, sure. But that doesn't explain why ROTJ has by far the lowest OS ratio of any of the saga. Unless it really was the Ewoks . . .

That may be true, but ET (which was released less than a year before ROTJ and was far more heavily pirated) made over $300m OS. I think it's more likely that franchise fatigue was setting in, even though every kid I knew back then thought ROTJ was the best of the trilogy. How times change

Are you talking about America or Europe?

Because in Europe piracy was not the issue. Televison was the big thing in the 70s/80s, which killed cinema then.
