Blankments
November: November 7-9: Chuck Norris and Liam Neeson vs. the Abominable Snowman: 8/10 Although not as good as the original with some of its satire being overdone, Chuck Norris and Liam Neeson prove to be quite the action stars yet again, and the addition of Jackie Chan to the cast adds some really cool fights. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King: 3.5/10 The sad thing about The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is that if it had a larger budget, it could’ve been a nice little Christmas movie, although forgettable. However, as it is, it is unforgettable, as the animation is incredibly ugly. November 14-16: Kardashians! World’s Greatest Family: 0/10 Why? Just why? The Triple Nickels: 8.5/10 The Triple Nickels didn’t do much for me with its blatant Oscar bait, but Terrence Howard’s performance is not to be missed. Never Say Goodbye: 8/10 The first thing you need to know about Never Say Goodbye is that its budget is insanely high, about $75 million more than Allen’s usual work. I honestly am marking off half a point just because of the budget. However, the movie is a typically great Woody Allen movie, with great performances from all the cast members. Michael Caine is a standout. Definitely a good time, and worth seeing. November 21-23: Insurgent: 8.5/10 Insurgent is a great movie, with great acting, and another good script. However, it doesn’t reach the heights of the original film. November 26-30: Citizen Hughes: 9/10 While Citizen Hughes does not include Nolan’s finest script due to its episodic tone, it remains fascinating thanks to the expert direction, fantastic cinematography and brilliant acting by Carrey and Modine. The Sketchbook: 8.5/10 The Sketchbook is really cute and really funny, and a must-see for any family. The only issue is the final act didn’t seem quite as polished as the first two. Wenan: 8.5/10 Wenan proves to be a highly ambitious film that both succeeds and fails at its goals. However, it is definitely worth seeing to form your own opinion, and also to see the glorious 70mm cinematography. Month Ranking 1. Citizen Hughes 2. Wenan 3. The Triple Nickels 4. The Sketchbook 5. Insurgent 6. Never Say Goodbye 7. Chuck Norris and Liam Neeson vs. the Abominable Snowman 8. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King 9. Kardashians! Blankments
December: December 5-7: La Bourrage Marron: 2.5/10 Out of the French films to be bring to America, why this one? La Bourrage Marron has a terrible script, ranging from the nonsensical, to the plain bad. Death of a Salesman: 8.5/10 Death of a Salesman doesn’t do anything creative with the source material, but the ensemble cast does a great job keeping it a good movie, and a real Oscar contender. The Road Home: 9.5/10 The Road Home has a fantastic script, great direction, and overall is one of the best movies of the year. A must-see. December 12-14: The Bellringer of Notre Dame: 8/10 The Bellringer of Notre Dame feels a bit too much of a retread of the Disney film at points, but it is saved by the masterful performances of Anne Hathaway and Christopher Lee, along with its stunning cinematography. Ready, Player One: 8.5/10 Ready, Player One is a thrilling sci-fi movie that can be quite humorous as well. Plus, DAVID TENNANT. December 19-21: Alesia: 8.5/10 Although I’m not one for the historical epic, Alesia is still a good movie with excellent action and direction with phenomenal acting. A Series of Unfortunate Events: 8/10 A Series of Unfortunate Events feels like two films forced into one, but Gary Oldman is an exquisite Count Olaf, and the rest of the cast holds up pretty well. Miracle Kids: 9/10 While it does border on the sentimental at points, Miracle Kids is a great drama that makes you think. Oliver Stone returns to form with this, a true Oscar contender. December 25-28: Lord Madship: 8.5/10 Lord Madship can’t really decide what its tone is, but Michael Fassbender is a terrific Bond, and the action is exciting. Plus, there’s David Tennant. In the Line of Service: 7/10 In the Line of Service has great acting and direction, but I just didn’t feel the direction of the story. Still worth seeing. Month Ranking 1. The Road Home 2. Miracle Kids 3. Ready, Player One 4. Lord Madship 5. Alesia 6. Death of a Salesman 7. The Bellringer of Notre Dame 8. A Series of Unfortunate Events 9. In the Line of Service 10.
