Truly uneventful box office runs for all Dragon movies except the first. This kind of animated action movies struggle to get big audiences. Plus, only Toothless is the only interesting character of this series. This franchise is Toothless and few else.

well written character-driven animated films have a much harder time than lowest common denominator ones.

That may be the nature of products that are sold to children. I am just thankful I get to watch them.

It’s sad but true.

Sad for this franchise.

Though, for some reason, despite loads of people I know thinking the 1st was really good, they never watched 2 or 3.

Pity that animated movies that try to tell a good story do much worse than Illumination's shit, which may be even worse than the old Dreamworks.

I think it comes down to American audiences not liking fantasy and sci-fi as much compared to superhero and comedy films.

Pretty sad that Dragon 3 isn't going to get anywhere close to 2 after that opening.

Captain Marvel really hurt it last weekend and the recovery now is irrelevant.

(Posted in the weekend thread), but it's such a shame that though the first was beloved, it never translated to box office success for the sequels. How does Despicable Me or Hotel Transylvania keep more/increase their audience whilst this just dropped and dropped?

I'm glad that the trilogy got made, but still sad at how it was relatively unrewarded. Hell, Boss Baby will make more than it. Boss freaking Baby. How did that get better legs?

Just now, Mulder said:

It's about to hit 153 million and needs about 28 million more to pass HTTYD2. It will be interesting if it manages to accomplish that.

impossible to happen sadly. At least it's reached 500M mark.

THE BOTTOM LINE

As opposed to the lofty-priced animation features during the Katzenberg DreamWorks era; Dragon 2 costing an estimated $145M, and the original 2010 version costing $165M before P&A, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was, by far, the cheapest at $129M. No surprise, as Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, who was given grand oversight of DreamWorks Animation 2.0, is known for making animated pics at a budget —even the studio’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 turned a profit. Total revenues including theatrical, global home entertainment, and TV were $448M. Subtract total global costs of $318M, and Universal walks away with $130M.
