Blade Runner 2049 did what Blade Runner couldn't, and won the Oscar for Visual FX. It was expected and well deserved, one human in particular is a significant landmark in the history of film.

 

The cinematography nod was a nice surprise for me.

In the Blu Ray Bonuses, Villeneuve acknowledges Deakins is basically the co-director of the movie and the visual language is Deakins, he had Carte Blanche and was involved in the movie super early.

I don't think there is another DP in the world that has as much influence on a film than Deakins.

Chivo was a Mallick, Inarittu & Cuaron creation for example, most great DPs are the "creation" of their directors IMO.

With Deakins, it is the other way around.

The 4K release is apparently a Killer app for the format. I bought it but can’t watch that version yet since I don’t have the equipment
