exact reason why TLK greenlighted for July 12

Hobbs & Shaw, Once Upon A Time in HLW both on track for day and date relase

Can you give more thorough reasons as to why censor Chinese movies vs imports?

run into censorship issues at Beijing's Central Propaganda Authority

Eight Hundred is a double edge sword to CCP. It is based on the historical Defense of Sihang Warehouse (DoSW), one of the most iconic battle in War of Resistance against Japanese aggression in 1937-1945. However, the 800 soldiers (actual number was 423) were from Nationalist Army under Chiang Kai-shek led Kuomintang (KMT, Chinese Nationalist Party), the archrival of Chinese Communist Party. CCP might fight a few battles in Sino-Japanese War, but certainly had no role at all in DoSW.

Nationalist Army/KMT suffered great loss in this Sino-Japanese War, while many people believe CCP and its army did not fully engage themselve in this war but rather benefited from it and grew in size and strength by dodging. CCP finally defeated KMT in the 1945-1949 Civil War. Chiang Kai-shek and his Nationalist Army retreated to Taiwan.

In past 20 years, CCP slowly and gradually recognises Nationalist Army/KMT's role in War of Resistance, but insists that CCP was the mainstay/cornerstone/"tower of strength" in the War.

So on one hand Eight Hundred can promote the patriotism which may help the Chinese to be steadfast in current Trade War with USA. On the other hand, it may stir up controversy with regards to CCP's role in War of Resistance, and how much cover-up of historical facts occurred under CCP's regime. Not a good timing when China economy is not in good shape to let doubts cast on the regime's authenticity/legitimacy.

TBH I was expecting 800 to be banned after @Gavin Feng pointing out few months back that China is getting hard on propoganda films like Wolf Warrior 2. I don't know historical accuracy of 800 but I won't shed any tears if something awful like WW 2 is banned

Ironically, if Eight Hundred is historically accurate, it is very likely be banned by CCP. If it is not truthful about (or underplays) which Army the soldiers were from, and instead plays up the "inspirational role" CCP claims it had on Chinese people back in Resistance War, then it can be released.

My guess is, this film will be asked to do major overhaul before re-submitted to censorship board.

It is sad but laughable too as well. Imagine MPAA banning Endgame and TROS in US.

More like if president was Bernie Sanders and he banned American sniper :D

One more question, @Gavin Feng. The last BIG release of the summer: Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. Are we still thinking it can get a day and date release with the US in China on August 2nd? Or is it too early to tell?

some chances to get a Aug date. If not, it probably will not come until the middle of Oct.

That’s crazy to me. Yea it’s great for FFH and TLK, but at the expense of potentially amazing Chinese cinema. Sucks.

Because Chinese audiences tend to less emtionally invested in imported films which boast foreign characters and are about stories taking place aboard—at least in most cases. Even more so when it comes to grand made Hollywood films. They are just there to be entertained. However, from local films, audiences often, and necessarily expect to get not only entertainment but also thoughts, and reflections of the culture and socity they live in. Famliar faces of local actors only enhance the connection.

CCP certainly knows it. Its propaganda centrum knows it. So there be the double standards of censorship on local and imported films.

When the regime is built on threats and lies, speaking of totalitarian, naturally everything shall be censored: thought, theory, opinion, discovery, publication, art...film is just a small part of the big picture....only to find out and put out any potentail revolt, any fighting against authoritarian & authority. The authority could be the government, the police, or an official, a parent, a teacher, a professor. Fundamentally it is the same parenting role. Many Chinese films simply died because of this.

China is not 1984......yet. But objectively the US-China trade war is moving China one step closer to Noth Korea, on the political attitude so far, as CCP tights its control on Chinese people. It is possible that China bans American films alltogether if the tension rises, aka revolving into a new cold war, a totally disconnected China and US.

With The Eight Hundred (maybe Better Days and The Last Wish as well), we have our first caucalties (at CBO).

Edited sentence: of course, eventually these films could still struggle to theaters, after raped by censorship.

Dark Phoenix with a whopping 95% drops from last Friday. Probably around 55-56m after this weekend. Total may not be much more than 60-61m. Maybe even less at 55m. Atrocious legs.

Godzilla 2 with a 89% drop from last Friday. Dont see more than 130m at this point.
