According to local reports, more than 40 new coronavirus cases in Beijing have been confirmed.

you dont say ? wow,

sorry for being ironic , but i mean you are in a   country of 1,3 billion people did anyone really expect china to have 10 cases all the time ? lol

ps personally i think that the goverment should give cinemas financial help, cinemas or other buisness are not their toys to play with, if they dont want them to open for now, they sould at least help them financially

ps2 i  hope that this is not their strategy is  completly unrealistic to think that china will stay wtih 10 cases all the time, they shoud do more testing imo

I would have hoped for Parasite, as it could have potentially done $150-200mn, going by general Taiwan to China ratio, but guess COVID and Piracy has killed all its chances.

no more that much after Oscar.

Yeah Oscar buzz would have worked well in February release but even without that $5.5mn in Taiwan for a non-English film suggests $150mn plus easily.

Parasite has grossed $5mn in Taiwan. Looking at some data, that suggest a possibility of $100-175mn in China, most around $150mn ish.

Ratio of China Breakouts to Taiwan.

Dangal: $188mn against $5.5mn: 34x

Secret Superstar: $116mn against $0.9mn: 128x (outlier)

Coco: $184mn against $4.8mn: 38x

Zootopia: $237mn against $8.7mn: 27x

Green Book: $72mn against $1.9mn: 37x

Bigger films, which have established fanbases.

Aquaman: $292mn against $15mn: ~20x

Endgame: $631mn against $29mn: 22x

Venom: $270mn against $10mn: 27x

Shame with Covid-19 we are missing that but I am told there is an unofficial ban on Korean film in China but government may allow this one to cover for the loss due to Covid-19.

Parasite could have made that much even without any Oscar buzz if it was released any day of last year. It was one of the most discussed films in Chinese social media. Joker and Parasite got lots of conversations right after the films went online. But both of them are talking about class polarization, a topic that made them be stuck in censorship process. Because of the HK demonstrations, Joker got killed. Parasite finally got approved in recent, but it probably couldn't have a wide release plan. Richard Jewell was released in the beginning of this year. It actually shows some sensitive plots. Film Bureau only gave it a limited release show.

Not to mention the still sour relationship between Beijing and Seoul. They may still release it post-Oscar win in the art cinema chain like Bohemian Rhapsody.
