Pirates midnight number is fantastic. But its PS is not great. It needs a great PS multi to have a par OD.  Dangal has slowed down and I think will stop around 1B yuan. Still fantastic run. Guardians will slow down considerably and will either barely make or miss 100m USD. Legs were not bad but overall run is meh.

Maoyan prediction

POTC5 -120M not including midnights

PS at 46.6m. That's 2.6x like WC.

I'll stick with 3x minimum 140m. Maybe 150m.

WW looking weak so far.

Dangal just 15m tomorrow.

Demand steam running out

In Wonder Woman thread, someone said that Wonder Woman would flop in China. Do you have any pre-sales number for comparison ?  But, that is not surprising at all, TBH.

The pre-sale started yesterday and we cant make conclusion so early. I only know WW marketing in China is fucking great and better than Pirates5+Mummy+GotG2 even if its official weibo made some stupid issues. Tencent+Wanda, who earned the chance for WW holding previews on May.31, are good partners of WB.

WoM for Pirates seems to be great... Score of 9 on Maoyan,,, not bad at all.

Douban its already at 7.6. Maoyan is always high. Guardians started at 9.3.

Anyway its off to a fast start. Already at 58.3m and climbing. As @POTUS said its going to open to 140-150m. Big question is how the legs will be. Tomorrow its showcount is down 15%.

True. Just look at its 1st Mon to thur drops. It crashed 20% every day. That is not a great run. It also had open run till Guardians opened. If it behaved remotely like F7 it would have grossed 3B+.

it's still a sequel with a rushed upfront audience (which is true everywhere) and it made a crazy amount of money.

doubling 7 day gross is fantastic. Most movies struggle to double even 3 day gross. F7 did great and had great 2nd/3rd/4rth weekend holds. Both F7 and Fate had open runs as well. Fate benefited from screen expansion to finish slightly higher than F7.

I am not saying Fate's gross was bad. Just that it was not leggy.

local filmmaker begged theaters to give more showtimes for their “good film” Edge of Innocence. The films producer Ann An said this on Weibo:

We made many good films like Perhaps Love, 14 Blades, Ip Man 1&2, Tiny Time 1&2, Zhong Kui and so on. All of them earned great WOM from audience. We do solid work and never ask for help from others, which is a very valuable spirit in China film industry. We spend two years to make the film called Edge of Innocence. It earns 9.1 on Maoyan(previews. It will open on Tomorrow). It changed its release date because of actor/actress changing, and was in trouble like budget shortfalls. But those difficulties offered us the great power to make a great work. (actor/actress are good and bla bla bla) It’s a good film no matter which way you review it. But it only has 5.5% showtimes on opening day. Other local films’ showtimes have about 10% on opening day, too. But Pirates 5 has 51%. Local films are definitely dead in this kind of environment. Hope Theaters can cut the showtimes of Pirates 5 and it won’t hurt its box office. Please save local films, please! please!

Makes sense but why did he release in such a crowded weekend? There were so many dead weekends it could have opened with more showtimes.

Because most local filmmakers don’t dare to open on ordinary weekend. It’s a dragon boat festival weekend, meaning big money for them.
