The same happened in the west at Christmas, december was a dead month for blockbusters until Avatar

2001: Lords of the Rings

2002: Lords of the Rings 2

2003: Lords of the Rings 3

2004: The Fockers (279M)

2005: Narnia (291M)

2006: Night at the Museum (250M)

2007: I am legend (256M)

Those were all bigger or similar (the 3 Hobbits being the same franchise) to the December release that followed Avatar until Star Wars no ?

Looking at China Top Opening Weekend or Best 3 days in first frame for Hollywood, it starts with a massive Endgame and has IW and Furious around there at $200M, but then it suddenly go to just $100M.

  1. Endgame - 1705M ($254M)*
  2. Fate of the Furious - 1352M ($196M)
  3. Infinity War - 1272M ($201M)
  4. Transformer 5 - 872M ($127M)
  5. Furious 7 - 813M ($131M)*
  6. Venom - 767M ($110M)
  7. Hobbs and Shaw - 713M ($101M)
  8. Far From Home - 677M ($98.5M)
  9. Aquaman - 652M ($95M)
  10. Age of Ultron - 620M ($100M)*

* means Best 3 Days in first frame for midweek releases.

Saying so because, I just read somewhere that why is GvK $80M considered HUGE when China has $200M openers, but still whenever something opens $80M, that feels HUGE.

Yeah I guess piracy is having some effect. A pity really.  WB could have had a massive hit if they'd kept it theatrical exclusive.

I don't think this is due to piracy. It's a week before release and the movie's doing pretty well in India when that country has a bigger piracy problem than China does.

In South India, in smaller cities where news of HBO Max might not be that widespread.
