Now, 2 and 3 were after Christmas Weekend, 4 was after the 4th of July holiday weekend, 5, 7, 9, 10 were all after Memorial Day weekend. So the three that are allowed for your "after a non-holiday weekend" are TFA at $40.1m, JW at $25.3m and TDK at $24.5m. So although the $22m for FF8 is very good, it's not quite record breaking thanks to TFA. 

 

The only argument you can make, is that TFA had Christmas weekdays and both JW and TDK had summer weekdays.

 

EDIT:

If you were even more specific that summer/christmas weekdays were not allowed, then the top 3 are actually BvS with $15.0m, Furious 7 with $14.0m (This was Easter Weekend) and BatB with $13.5m. And yes, in that specific case the $22m+ from FF8 in China seems record-smashing.

Yeah, excluding Summer/Holiday Mondays, the closest DOM Monday is probably The Avengers (~$18.9m).

It might take a minute to get oriented, but I think it should be fairly clear how it works and you can use that to compare to FF8 however you want.

Wages were high relative to the ticket price 50 years ago. A ticket was less than one hour's work at minimum wage. 

Movie houses were/are in small towns dotted across America and most people had/have cars.

Minimum wage is $1 in some provinces. That's a half days pay to buy a $5 ticket and most do not have cars. Would you pay $40 for a ticket?

 

Domestic ticket sales were at a high when wages were low in the 30s during the depression. But talkie movies were new, they dropped a ticket to .25c, 1/2 hours pay, and there wasn't Internet, DVD, TV, Porn and video games. Also there either was a double feature with a b movie, or a movie and a serial (precursor to the TV show) and a news real. It was 3 -4 hours of escapism during a bad time and they had a new thing called AC for those hot summer days

FF7 only dropped 46% due to a sunday open with lots of sellouts causing a spillover of demand. Skewing older it dropped 61% on the following Mondays compared to SH drops of 66-69%.

FF8 dropped 54% on Monday. That show weekend demand spillover of an extra 8% or 12m. It will need 12% drops thru thursday to have a chance to reach 3B,  2.28x OW.

@POTUS, are you taking into account the may day weekend effect during its 3rd weekend. It will still be grossing big money. if it can stay ahead of all other movies by the time Guardians 2 opens, it will continue to keep few thousand screens beyond that as well.
