Same IMO. Unless its really good quality

The thing is that if, lets say, sequel to a shitty movie is actually good, it still has hard time attracting audience back cause they got burned the first time. Unless we are talking about super franchises such as MCU, that managed to turn meh anticipation for Ragnarok after TDW into a must-see thing. But what MCU did is genius. They changed the entire tone of the movie and let the previews show that it was in no way like TDW. And they didn't hide the money shot (Thor vs Hulk). OTOH, studios are rarely ready to take completely different route in order to salvage the situation. They simply do more of the same but with bigger 'splosions.

What about the Godzilla sequel ?

Wait for the teaser. If Godzilla sequel is same quality as Kong Skull island,King of Monsters can be big too.Kong teaser is great. It seems Legendary picture works well with WB.Kong,Godzilla and the first Pacific rim are all great monster films. But Legendary fail with UNI.The Great Wall,Pacific rim uprising Both flop.strange.

I don't think Pacific rim is a shitty film. The first one is too good. The sequel is much worse. So Audience hate the sequel more than ever.If they don't fire Del Toro,Pacific rim2 will be much better.Audience hate they change the tone and staff from the original ones.Del Toro is the key.if Pacific rim sequel is still directed by Him,$200M+ is not impossible. His taste for Monster Film is excellent.

Even MCU has strong brand.Black Pather will likely drop in the future.Audience don't like it.So they abandon it.It won't drop like Star wars. But It's very possible to decrease

PRU missing 100 in China will be some story. Especially when TR is looking at 80 and is comparatively a smaller film especially in China, which faced PRU in the 2nd weekend.

A month back would have been considered normal for PRU to do 2.5-3x TR (150-160 vs 50-60)

so what's cited as the main reasons for PRU under-performance - previews, actors, too long a gap between PR and PRU, change in taste, bad WOM, something else?

too long between movies I say is main reason. The first one is forgotten. If it came out two or three years after the first it would have likely done better

Agreed. There's nostalgia (over 10 years, strong franchise) and then there's no-one-cares-anymore.
