As an ethnic Chinese, I think this movie going behavior is very much like how we choose food. For centuries we go to eataries/food outlets/hawker stalls based on WOM of common people and individual tastes. How often do you see ads/commersials of Chinese restaurants?

As a people know for their pragmatism, I don't think Chinese GA read critics' review before going for movies, and marketing and advertisement can only create hype for a brief period. It is amazing to see how in this digital age the Chinese people make use of prosumers site like Douban and general comsumers site like Maoyan to make individual choices for movies based on WOM.

Thank you! Always great to hear the opinion from the market itself! :)

RPO is suffering negative comments attack on Maoyan from Erdong Pictures, the distributor of a russian film "花滑女王" released this weekend. RPO is now scored 9.2 with 2.4% of the total comments give 1 or 2 out of ten, for comparison, Detective Chinatown 2 scored 9.2 while 1.2% give 1 or 2, Peter Rabbit 9.0 and 0.9%, The Commuter 8.4 and 2.5%. Hence, about half of the negative comments come from the devious attack.

How do you know they're attacking the film though? Does this happen often in China? So, the film would be at a 9.3-9.4 without this attack.

Attacking the film or click farming on those websites are common in China. A lot of the negative and postive comments are made by paid posters, who are hired by companies that run click farming as a business. This activity can be seen on every popular website that has a rating system, or, as long as a online rating system is popular, it's safe to assume that there are a shit load of click farming there. And this happens not just on movies, but pretty much every entertainment products. It's actully worse on gaming platforms like App Store.

This of cause is not a China thing, but IMO it's a lot worse in China than in other countries.

It is so common that many audiences automatically inflates a movie score by themselves. Eg if a movie is rated 9.2, some of them mentally think it is a 9.5 cause by default they assumed that there are some attacks.
