Attacking the film or click farming on those websites are common in China. A lot of the negative and postive comments are made by paid posters, who are hired by companies that run click farming as a business. This activity can be seen on every popular website that has a rating system, or, as long as a online rating system is popular, it's safe to assume that there are a shit load of click farming there. And this happens not just on movies, but pretty much every entertainment products. It's actully worse on gaming platforms like App Store.

This of cause is not a China thing, but IMO it's a lot worse in China than in other countries.

Interesting. I had no idea - because in order to rate on maoyan you have to see the movie, right? And, the person knew what company was doing it... was that just a guess since they're in direct competition with each other?

How do you know they're attacking the film though? Does this happen often in China? So, the film would be at a 9.3-9.4 without this attack.

too many accounts that have reviewed the same other movies including "花滑女王" give RPO 1-2. yep, they buy ticket before reviewing, it cost about $5 each review.

43.8m total was higher than I thought it would be at 1200. 10.5m for 1200-1300. Should maintain that average thru 2230 and come in at least 155m. Strong walk ups could bump the average later in the day and take it over 160m

A likely projection. could be much higher though

Fr       85m

Sa    157

Su    155       $64m OW

Mo    70        -55%

Tu     70

We    70       will lose 40% of it shows but will play like a friday nite

Th   140       100% bump but could be more, 200m would be fun if WoM is wildfire

Fr    140

Sa   120       sunday is a workday for some and eve will be weaker

Su   100

Tot 1107m/$175m

1572m/$250m looking good

Seems too high, especially Sunday which will work as a Monday.

those sunday workdays seem more like a summer Monday

WC was

Th  299

Fr  216

sa 137

su  73

Mo 47

tu 40

it was having big demand burn, 30-40% on fri and sat but you can see the sunday drop was just 46% instead of 66% then 35% on mon. Sat to mon was 66%.  on tues it normalized with a 15% drop

so I was assuming with WoM continuing to hold thru the weekend I applied softer 13-15% drops for Sat which should be like a summer sunday and sunday to be like a summer Monday, then Monday will be like a regular Monday

hy Black Panther and other Hollywood films failed to unseat Aamir Khan's Secret Superstar at the Chinese box office

Chadwick Boseman's boundary-smashing money-spinner Black Panther has been on a benchmark-setting spree at the box-office ever since its release on 29 January. Hailed as a cultural phenomenon for being the first Marvel film to feature a predominantly black cast, the movie has continued to set the cash registers ringing across the length and breadth of the world.

Black Panther is now the highest-grossing superhero film of all time in North America. It's also the highest-grossing comic book adaptation in North America and the fifth highest-grossing domestic film of all time and it is on the verge of dethroning Jurassic World to take the fourth spot after the Easter weekend. Globally, Black Panther is the twelfth highest-grossing film of all-time and the highest-earning solo superhero movie ever.

However, in China, the world's second-largest movie market, the Ryan Coogler-directorial has suffered defeat at the hands of Aamir Khan's Secret Superstar, which is still the highest-grossing import film of 2018 with a lifetime revenue of nearly $118 million.

Black Panther has earned a total of $105 million in the Middle Kingdom; a disappointing box-office haul considering other significant territories where the movie has raked in the moolah consistently. Black Panther however, is not the only big-budget Hollywood vehicle that has failed to attract moviegoers in China this year. Secret Superstar stands tall above Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Tomb Raider and Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

Gavin Feng, a Chinese box-office tracker, feels there's a growing confidence among exhibitors to screen non-English imports thanks to the success of recent Indian films. "Chinese distributors have more and more confidence in non-English import films, especially Indian movies. Everyone wants to run a project of Aamir Khan's in China. They also want to make another actor like Salman Khan become a superstar in China. I’m not sure how many Indian films will land this year. If Chinese investors want, it’s not difficult to let more Indian movies see the light of day in China," she said.

Universal's Pacific Rim: Uprising — which was the most highly anticipated import film in China in the first quarter — has pulled in nearly $87.23 million in 9 days in the PRC. It's now the third highest-grossing import film of 2018 in China, only behind Secret Superstar and Black Panther. However, Pacific Rim: Uprising will not be able to unseat Secret Superstar, observes Gavin.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising won’t beat Secret Superstar or even Black Panther in China. It’s a surprising but reasonable result. It shows how important the WOM is in China today. Black Panther and Pacific Rim: Uprising enjoyed a fantastic opening but dropped soon because the local audience didn’t enjoy it," she said.

While Dangal is raved about as China's leggiest film with a weekend-to-cume multiple of nearly 14.4, Secret Superstar is currently 2018's leggiest import film in China. "In China, there is a trend for movies to get worse multiples every year, because theaters love to give extra showtimes to new releases on opening weekend and drastically reduce it towards the second weekend following the arrival of new titles. Most Hollywood movies find it difficult to get a 2.5 multiplier or even two sometimes."

Crunching solid examples of Hollywood imports in China, Gavin says, "The Fate of the Furious ($196M three-day debut to $388M lifetime gross) has a 1.98 multiple, Spider-Man: Homecoming has 1.78 ($127M/$226M), Transformers: The Last Knight has 1.78 ($127M/$226M), Black Panther currently holds a 1.58 ($67M/around $105M), Star Wars: The Last Jedi has 1.44 ($28M/$40M). Secret Superstar however, has a wonderful 4.26 multiple."

Hindi Medium would be the next Indian release in the mainland cinemas of China on 4 April . Will it strike gold at the ticket window like the recent release Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which marked the foray of Salman Khan into the mainland? "In China, WOM is everything. The key reason why Secret Superstar and Dangal did good business in China is people think it’s great. We love Aamir Khan because he showed us good movies. If a big star continuously delivers bad movies, the audience will abandon him soon," Gavin said on a concluding note.

Really interesting article. Since some months ago I am becoming way more interested in China BO than in US's, and one data said in the article is one of the reasons.

USA has still not been able to give big numbers with non-English language films. On the other side, China is able to release 2 500 local film grossers the same day, a 200m Indian film (Dangal), 2 Japanese making huge numbers (Your name and Doraemon), a Spanish film making nearly 30 million (Contratiempo), and if I am not wrong, some Russian films making over 10 million.

Maybe I am wrong or my memory fails me, but I do not remember so many cases and so big in USA with those conditions.

In 2013, both The Hunger Games: Catching Fire & Frozen released on the same date (Nov. 22). Both did over 400 million (THG:CF 424.7m & Frozen 400.7m). Frozen was in limited release for the first 5 days tho. But it still should count. That's the only example of big breakouts on the same date I can recollect from the recent memory.

Edit: On second thought, it shouldn't really count. THG:CF already made 43.9% of it's final total before Frozen went wide. So this is not a similar situation to that of ORS & DC2.
