The funniest thing is the prediction that Pika will make at least $1B worldwide had been widely accepted as realistic and reasonable by many before the movie opened.

There was the running joke that it would be the highest grossing movie of 2019, beating Endgame, TLK blah blah, surpassing 2B, OW of 1B WW etc. (But a few seemed to be true believers then).

Why?

Censorship problems that will never be publicly specified. My understanding would be:

Eight Hundred— for “whitewashing"' the role of KMT in Anti-Japanese War

Better Days— for saying no to patriarchy

The Last Wish— for sexual content/desires (of young adult)

And more importantly these films have managed to tell their stories too well.

It is possible that Eight Hundred, Better Days, The Last Wish, the three biggest local films of this summer, will all be banned by CCP.

SAD

Great news for FFH if true :)

Yikes. So China box office will have to continue to rely on big Hollywood imports this year.

But its not official yet so hopefully they still get released.

exact reason why TLK greenlighted for July 12

Hobbs & Shaw, Once Upon A Time in HLW both on track for day and date relase

In the future, more and more local titles will face this situation. Import films will not have any problem with censorship.

That’s crazy to me. Yea it’s great for FFH and TLK, but at the expense of potentially amazing Chinese cinema. Sucks.
