Eh; not sure what you are getting at. Applies for many local language films in their respective countries; eg Bollywood films or Japanese films.

I note that in most cases, only Chinese films with big Hong Kong stars/directors (such as Jackie Chan/Stephen Chow/Donnie Yen/Chow Yun Fatt) generally also do well in other parts of Asia (mainly South East Asia)

Ah yes that's what I'm talking about. Mainland Chinese movies struggle outside of mainland China. But Japanese movies can become big in China, for instance. Even an Indian movie like Dangal  was big in China.

Bollywood actually has a market of potential $50mn outside India, which can further extended to $300mn or higher with markets like China, Japan and Korea.

Yes i know. But these does not apply to all or most Bollywood films; only high profile films or those where a few known actors are involved or critically acclaimed films.

Same as China; some films with well known stars do well elsewhere as well.

Issue is the language barrier... many audiences still will not watch a movie which is not their native tongue (other than English).

With China, there is also issue of propaganda films like Wolf Warriors / Operation Red Sea / Wandering Earth did not do that well overseas.

is it true we are looking at Spirited Away topping TS4 next week?

OD right now:

Spirited Away: 1.77m Yuan

Toy Story 4: 643k Yuan

So, SA is nearly tripling TS4.

The Saturday numbers are just double, I think actuals will have less difference as the late releases, especially having positive nerd hype, usually are frontloaded, especially during pre-sales.

I wish both could do great numbers. SA is my favorite animated film, but I love TS films too.

If I remember it right, Coco grossed $189M in China. Maybe Spirited Away could also do $100M+?

I would be happy with 85 mil. That makes it the highest grossing Anime movie WW (beating Your Name).

Almost impossible, one should never forget the fact that SA has been in release for 18 years, although never released in China .

I am looking for Your Name number in China, which is about 80m

Is it staying flat a good sign? Need it to keep ticking in China for a shot at 400m worldwide
