Menor the Destroyer
On Maoyan at least it has kept a decent pace, adding 4.4 million in the past 30 minutes. Should at least be pretty close to 180 I guess. Unless Maoyan is in error, but from what Charlie says it sounds like that would be an upward revision anyway. Valonqar
Numbers always go up. Yesterday meltdown was fun like all meltdowns but it was way premature...like all meltdowns. So OW should be between 70-75M no?

charlie Jatinder
So KoTM Saturday was Children's day which boosted Saturday. PS for tomorrow are very low. If PSm improves, can go for 120M Sunday may be.
charlie Jatinder
Maoyan PS are iffy as well. Official App has PS at 23M which means they are atleast 26-27M as they usually are on Maoyan relative to CBO App.
charlie Jatinder
Ok so Hollywood dead in China thing. I may not be fully correct hut here's but I think. Idiots like Scott Mendelson make a narrative that Chinese now prefer local films so Hollywood in China is dying. I mean figures says it no? Wrong. What has happened and what is quite similar in India too, that Hollywood is dominant in English speaking urban population. Initially Chinese box office was majorly from Tier 1 cities, that's why Hollywood films did more in box office but cinemas started expanding to smaller in last decade where local content will be preferred which is case with India too. In Tier 1 city like Shanghai Endgame is biggest grosser, even bigger than Wolf Warrior 2. Smaller the city you go local content has more appeal. This appeal isn't new found, the potential is now being started to tap. And why is Hollywood not performing? Because its not performing anywhere else too. Remove Disney from 2019, Hollywood did awful every where. There has been not a single good commercial film released since Frozen 2, how will they perform. Ohh there was one. Soul. And it did well. Hollywood is not dead, they aren't releasing the right films other than Disney. 4

Movies won't blow up from the first take after the pandemic. Also, Marvel hasn't opened in China yet. When that happens, Scott's narrative will be dead (pun intended). It really depends on a movie and release. With theaters and streaming device hybrid, it's hard to pull numbers reserved only for pure theatrical release. charlie Jatinder
So I did some numbers, and, well here they are... Hollywood Furious 7 Avengers 2 Fate of the Furious Infinity War Endgame Tier 1 ¥533.42 ¥351.63 ¥546.53 ¥520.26 ¥915.73 Tier 2 ¥1,073.28 ¥654.26 ¥1,127.45 ¥1,033.33 ¥1,806.69 Tier 3 ¥362.98 ¥209.05 ¥420.94 ¥361.07 ¥652.14 Tier 4 ¥453.44 ¥246.23 ¥576.01 ¥475.83 ¥874.43 % wise Furious 7 Avengers 2 Fate of the Furious Infinity War Endgame Tier 1 22.01% 24.06% 20.46% 21.76% 21.55% Tier 2 44.29% 44.78% 42.21% 43.23% 42.52% Tier 3 14.98% 14.31% 15.76% 15.10% 15.35% Tier 4 18.71% 16.85% 21.57% 19.91% 20.58% Local Monster Hunt Mermaid Wolf Warrior 2 Ne Zha The Wandering Earth Hi, Mom Tier 1 ¥464.21 ¥517.78 ¥1,038.99 ¥917.94 ¥715.99 ¥687.91 Tier 2 ¥1,065.11 ¥1,278.76 ¥2,321.16 ¥2,021.78 ¥1,788.35 ¥1,871.29 Tier 3 ¥389.75 ¥608.93 ¥929.79 ¥819.96 ¥815.42 ¥1,003.04 Tier 4 ¥515.61 ¥980.79 ¥1,394.55 ¥1,243.94 ¥1,361.33 ¥1,802.42 % wise Monster Hunt Mermaid Wolf Warrior 2 Ne Zha The Wandering Earth Hi, Mom Tier 1 19.07% 15.29% 18.28% 18.35% 15.30% 12.82% Tier 2 43.75% 37.76% 40.83% 40.41% 38.20% 34.88% Tier 3 16.01% 17.98% 16.36% 16.39% 17.42% 18.70% Tier 4 21.18% 28.96% 24.53% 24.86% 29.08% 33.60% The above is Tier wise box office distribution among the cities of China. As can be seen, more than 60% of Hollywood box office is from Tier 1 & 2 cities, it used to be near 70% prior to 2015. There is growth in Tier 3 and 4 cities, but not nearly as Local films, which is kind of obvious. Local films used to be around 60% plus from Tier 1 & 2 cities, now they are barely 50%, while Tier 3 and 4 are growing quite well. Now I realised, there could be one more reason behind Hollywood recent underperformance. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, where Hollywood do maximum business are down since COVID. Now that's trend in India as well, as urban folks are more conscious about social distancing and other reason in India is, probably would be in China too, that a lot of workforce is working from Home. So many people with their hometown in Tier 3 & 4 cities, who used to live in Tier 1 cities, are back in their hometown, watching films there. In January we saw this in India, when films were doing extraordinary business in small towns but in big cities they were sort of ehh. Even GvK, is doing GREAT in South India's small towns but Big cities are sort of just GOOD.
charlie Jatinder
There's no clear trend in hourlies to do for GvK. From 14:00 of Friday, looks like 120M while from on on Saturday, looks like 145M. For now let's go with 130M .i.e. 451M or $69M weekend. I think there's a shot at 1000M or $153M.

We will see how the impact of HBO max release on Wednesday impacts the daily / weekend drops. To be honest, at this stage while I am rooting for the film ( I watched and really liked it), I do hope WB gets a wake up call about this simultaneous release strategy..even though it’s only for its 2021 releases. It was honestly not easy getting my friends to watch the film as they all know they can see a HD copy for free in days....
