Not the first time they've done that sort of thing with an animated film. Tons of cartoons are released with the title "xx总动员" (roughly "xx mobilization") because that pattern is commonly used with Pixar films (Toy Story = 玩具总动员 "Toy Mobilization," Finding Nemo = 海底总动员 "Undersea Mobilization," Cars = 赛车总动员 "Racecar Mobilization," etc.). Free Birds was released a few weeks ago as 火鸡总动员 "Turkey Mobilization," Animals United was released as 动物总动员 "Animal Mobilization," there was a local film a couple of years ago called 熊猫总动员 "Panda Mobilization" (= Little Big Panda), and the domestic Happy Little Submarine franchise is called 潜艇总动员 (you can probably guess what that means). At this point I don't think it really fools anyone into thinking they're seeing a Disney/Pixar film, it's probably just seen as a default title for cartoons.

Don't think that will be a big problem, most people are not that dumb.

Of course they're not dumb :P But there could be many casual moviegoers who see this movie and later when HTTYD2 comes out they'll think "I've already seen something similar recently" and likely not go. Of course if the current movie tanks then it won't likely be a problem.

Yeah I remember there was an animation that looked eerily similar to kung fu panda a few years ago with a similar title.

Also just recently in Korea there was an animation released about little blue creatures with the title avatar:the secret forest or something similar

China expected to confirm second distribution license

Not sure how "seismic" this will actually be, especially since the new licensee is apparently a newcomer to the film biz. On the other hand that might be a point in their favor from Hollywood's perspective, since CFGC is heavily involved in domestic films and doesn't have much incentive to push imported movies. I also wonder if this presages the quota expansion that was reported (and denied) or month or two back—expanding the quota would be a decent reason to loosen CFGC's grip on imports.

So, it's all fake ... ?

Well, that pretty much closes the door of fantasy.

A little early, but some rough guesses for the 3days wkn:

    [*]Peabody --- 55m --- NEW

    [*]Monuments men --- 37m ---NEW

    [*]NFS --- 35m --- -55% --- 355m $58m

    [*]BCTI --- 17m --- -56% --- 76m

    [*]On the Way --- 15m --- NEW

[*]Justin and the Knights of Valour --- 10m --- NEW

Considering loose competition, literally I am predicting NFS to reach $60m before next weekend. It had a good slot with no real opponent. And WOM has been solid. Many probably did not notice, but the movie now already is the biggest March release in China, along with holding the March OW record. First March film to cross 300m.

This week is another slow one, looking to hang on the fence of 300m or slightly over 300m, depending on newcomers.

Based on Friday estimates, wkn looking like:

    [*]Monuments men --- 39m ---NEW

    [*]Peabody --- 38m --- NEW

    [*]NFS --- 35m --- -55% --- 357m $58m

    [*]BCTI --- 17m --- -56% --- 79m

    [*]On the Way --- 15m --- NEW

[*]Justin and the Knights of Valour --- 10m --- NEW

Peabody is the one overestimated. Others pretty much stay inline. See if Peabody can increase 100% on Sat.

Further revise based on Saturday estimates:

    [*]Peabody --- 42.5m (7.5/18/16) --- NEW [*]NFS --- 41m (9.8/17/14.5) --- 363m $59.5m [*]Monuments men --- 29m (9.1/11/9) --- NEW [*]BCTI --- 16m (4.2/6.2/5.3) --- 80m [*]On the Way --- 10.8m (3.2/4/3.5) --- NEW [*]Justin and the Knights of Valour --- 6.5m (1.6/2.6/2.3) --- NEW

All films were overestimated in earlier pres, except NFS and BCTI.

So Peabody wins the weekend after all. With holiday next weekend (it should increase next wkn), 150m is possible, even Rio 2 will come and get it killed in 11 days. Overall not a too bad result for an original Hollywood animation.

MM soft. It is hard to call it flop, since it is always supposed to be one of the lowest grossing revenue sharing quote of 2014. Obviously, foreign dramas are still hard to sell in China. Not to mention, it's a WWII period one.

Outstanding for NFS. Dropping less than 50% on 3rd wkn is pretty impressive these days for a Hollywood live action movie. Actually, it has been holding better than last November's Gravity, the lastest Hollywood live action film that had normal legs in China. Achieving 3x multiplier off 3days OW, which was very normal pre-2013, has not been easy for non-animation Hollywood movies since early 2013. Even Pirates 4 with terrible WOM finished with 3.24x back in 2011. But in 2013, only PR, Escape Plan, Gravity, and maybe STID did it, per my memory.

At this point, NFS is having a very solid shot at 400m $65m, even CA2 will come to swamp it away in 4 days.

BCTI will clear 100m sometime next week. On the Way underwhelms, Justin flops, despite mislending HTTTYD ties and media pushs everywhere.

Animated features are doing big business in China this year.

Excellent analysis. I too think animated films definitely have a bright future in China. Now and in coming few years, family audience will increase at a higher rate than the overal audience as more couples are bring their children to the theaters.
