Every other animated sequel after 2000 that outgrossed the original (Toy Story 3, Shrek 2, Ice Age 2 and 3, Madagascar 3, Despicable Me 2) were part of a franchise in the national consciousness. The characters from those five are instantly recognizable no matter how old you are, and all of them appealed to adults as much as to kids. The Hotel Transylvania franchise on the other hand has at best a strong cult fandom, not dissimilar to Cloudy. The first movie wasn't talked about much by the general public after its release. I still see it frequently in bargain bins. I don't think anyone expected the sequel to be THIS big. I expected it to have a big opening weekend and then taper off. I'm baffled.
