Del Toro says what every director says when he has a film shot out from under him...which is what happened here.

Truth is Del Toro is a filmmaker that has had a lot of critical sucess, and a fan following, but has yet to make that one big box office blockbuster that will put him in the Spielberg/Nolan/Jackson class, which makes studios skpetical when he asks for  huge budgets.(i think that Pacific Rim was his bid to have the huge hit that could enable him to get other expensive projects greenlighted. And that Del Toro is notoriously unwilling to lower his budget demands does not make things easy for him. Rumor has it that he could have made Mountains of Madness with an R rating if he had accpeted a 100 Million Dollar budget and a less expenisve actor then Tom Cruise but turned it down...IMHO a mistake. No reason, if you look at the Lovecraft novella,he could not have made a really good version for 100 Milliion bucks, and ,frankly, the lead charecter could be played by just about any leading man in Hollywood.

He has no trouble getting his more modest projects, like Crimson Peak, greenlighted. Which might be as well, since I fell that he does better with more modest projects then the big ones. WIth PR, I think he got too caught up playing with all his new toys,at the expense of his storytelling and charecter development..which has always been his strongpoints.

Mako Mori - orphaned by a kaiju attack at a young age, she carries her grief with her(literally and figuratively) and has worked her ass off to get to the point where she could co=pilot a jaeger in the hopes of avenging her parents.  But her memories and fears make it very difficult to drift with another pilot.  She conquers both her memories and the kaiju and avenges her parents

Raleigh Beckett - hot-shot, rock star jaeger pilot that endures his brothers death while connected in the drift.  Drifts around doing odd jobs to stay alive until he gets a second chance.  Trains Mako to be his co-pilot and helps her overcome her fears and together, he regains the confidence he once had and she avenges her parents death

Stacker Pentacost - one of the original jaeger pilots, finds Mako as a child and becomes her surrogate father.  He is too overprotective and doesn't want her to be a pilot for fear of losing her.  He finally realizes that she is a pilot and lets her go.  He then sacrifices his life to help stop the kaiju

Each of these characters has a clearly defined arc.  Even some of the supporting characters do to.  They might be subtle or minor, but just about everyone is a different person by the end of the movie.  That's the definition of character development.  Now, maybe you didn't like the characters or thought they were boring, that's fine.  But to say they weren't actual characters with individual motivations and arcs, you are wrong.

I never said there was NO charecter development. What I said it was not nearly as  well handled,as in some of his other films, and I have to think that having the biggest budget he ever had, and all the SFX he never had access to before distracted him.

And,frankly, all of the above are pretty cliched.

In the end, I could not give really care about any of the charecters, whereas I cared, deeply, about the charecters in "Pan's Labyrinth". Del Toro  fell far short of what he is capable of in this aspect of "Pacific Rim".

Universal Studios Entertainment has just moved Pitch Perfect 3 to August 4, 2017, saying Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2, which previously held that date, "will be redated at a later time". Universal also said they "are committed to having PACIFIC RIM 2, the sequel to 2013’s PACIFIC RIM, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of PACIFIC RIM 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."
