This isn't LotR 4. It's been ten years since ROTK came out.....why would the fans all flock to see this the minute it comes out? People will see this, but the gross will be spread out through the Christmas season.....

It was 17 years for TPM and that had a massive rush factor. LOTR, domestically and internationally, was at least on par with LOTR. So there should be a rush. Some of you in denial are talking about LOTR like it's a sequel to Magic Mike or Rush Hour 4. This is LOTR, one of the biggest movie phenoms ever.

Her maths could use some work.

She's using Avatar's multiplier.

Avatar.

That, or copying Variety maybe:

Held at 3,100 midnight locations domestically, with 326 Imax, the strong latenight start matches what the pic has been collecting in advanced ticket sales: Two days prior to its release, "The Hobbit" was outpacing "The Avengers," which earned $17 million this summer in advanced ticket sales.

I Am Legend is a better comparison film than Avatar as it opened on the same exact day in 2007. Avatar, on the other hand, opened much closer to Christmas, which helped boost its Sunday number.

Word of mouth looks concerning... down to 81% on Flixster. This really is going to come down to the general audience (families) at this point. Eerily reminiscent of Crystal Skull.

That's the feeling I get too.

That + the snow storm, IIRC. But maybe more importantly, its internal weekend word of mouth spread like wildfire.

That article compares TH to Skyfall. I could be writing for Variety.

Buddy....80% of us at this site could be and should writing for one of these major film publications. We have an inherently deeper knowledge of this stuff....mainly because we dissect everything 24 hours a day.
