Impact
I also remember that tons though that Harvey would have no nominations last year-SLP was unseen and Django didn't seem like a Oscar nominee at the time.
riczhang
Current rankings: (and note, I don't do rankings based on current buzz like many on ADF seem to think is the proper way, which I think is absurd, but I do rankings based on how I think the current buzz will play out over the rest of the season.) [*]Philomena (NGNG, though this is at 93% on RT and looks to do mid-80s if not more on MC ) [*]Inside Llewyn Davis [*]Gravity [*]12 Years a Slave (Brokeback Mountain here we go again) [*]American Hustle (Sight Unseen, I suppose this is #5) [*]August: Osage County [*]Rush [*]All is Lost [*]The Wolf of Wall Street (I dunno. This might be a huge misfire. And I really didn't like the trailer) [*]Le Passé Edited September 14, 2013 by riczhang
Jake Gittes
Scorsese hasn't had a misfire since I don't even know when. And of his last 5 films all four that were released in the fall got BP and BD nominations.
Dementeleus
Seems like just a crazy roll of the dice to say PHILOMENA is the frontrunner at the moment (or even the foreseeable future).

Jake Gittes
Right at this point I would go with the tide and say 12 Years a Slave is the frontrunner, but I also won't be shocked if it ends up like TSN and Brokeback Mountain in the end. Jake Gittes
Bringing out the Dead Haven't seen it. RT consensus calls it "stunning and compelling", though, so it definitely wasn't a critical misfire.
Dementeleus
BOTD got a pretty mixed reception... not sure what crack RT is smoking.

And of his last 5 films all four that were released in the fall got BP and BD nominations. I know. And that's part of the reason why I think this might fail. You can't fly that high for that long and not expect to fall at some point. Seems like just a crazy roll of the dice to say PHILOMENA is the frontrunner at the moment (or even the foreseeable future). I'm not saying it is the frontrunner at the moment. That'd be ranking based on current buzz, which is definitely 12 Years or Gravity. I'm saying that I believe by February that Philomena will be on top. And it's just a hunch at the moment: a gut feeling.
Impact
In 1997 Amistad was thought to be the frontrunner for a while since Spielberg was doing it.
Jake Gittes
I remember people in 1999 going "Was the director on crack" Sounds great. I really love it when Scorsese just goes for broke - it's why I found Shutter Island to be better than anything else he's done since 2000. pieman
I actually remember hearing that it was likely to only get nominated for screenplay and supporting actor. It was considered a lock for a bunch of nominations including Picture from it's first screening
riczhang
Shutter Island was a misfire Not it wasn't. It's one of my favourite recent martys. Probably only bested by Hugo. Now that was just utterly amazing.
Dementeleus
SHUTTER ISLAND was lots of fun. I didn't think it was any sort of masterpiece, though.
riczhang
Does anyone know when Fishy's coming back? I know she was banned indefinitely, but Oscar threads just aren't the same without her. (What I'm really trying to say is bring Fish back for Oscar Sunday. )
