John Carpenter: Horror, Action - and "Starman", his other film. Somehow it doesn't really fit into his portfolio (same as "Big Trouble in Little China"), and so it gets overlooked quite a bit, but it's a really beautiful film, quiet, slow-paced, intelligent and warm-hearted, with funny and touching performances by Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen (both well in their 30s when shooting this which really helps with the many close-ups). They could have gone for a far more action-heavy and fast-paced approach but wisely refrained from doing so.Is it a cash-in, hot on the trails of 70s alien hits ET and Close Encounters? It may well be, but Starman is far more adult and intelligent than both (imho). One thing I could do without: The score. It's the worst thing about Starman and in parts so grating the whole film gets only a "B" from me
